  • ...the Chinese axiom "Give a man a fish, and you have fed him once. Teach him how to fish and you have fed him for a lifetime." The Rotarian, June 1964
  • Some Statistics • Dropout of School after 7th Standard = 52.78% of total youth = 131.95 Million • These 131.95 Million may join Labor force early without any skills training • Resulting in 13.7228 Million Unskilled labor • Out of the 250 Million Indian Youth (14 to 24) 13.3 % youth is Unemployed In India = 33.25 Million • Resulting in Poor Indians = 273.75 Million as of 2011
  • So what's the need • Impart skills to the youth before he joins labor force. • Involve currently trained & skilled entrepreneurs for e.g. Plumber, Fitter, welder, car or scoter Mechanic, cycle repairer, construction worker, electrician, motor & Pump mechanic, Carpenter, DTP operator, established farmers, Organic farmers, Mushroom Growers, machine operator, accountant, marketer, etc to join this mission. • Provide enough and encouraging stipend to the youth to make skills training attractive
  • Why Should Rotary Get involved? • Prevention of youth entering the vicious cycle of poverty & disease through training • Rotary is a organization of vocation leaders • Rotarians have zest to serve & do good • Tremendous benefits to the youth between 14 & 24 • Even short term training (say 6 to 12 months) may be enough at the informal workshops & garages.
  • Proposed Model • Identify the garages & workshops / offices in the community run by skilled entrepreneurs • Tap the dropouts from the school • Take a aptitude test & do need assessment • One club Fund one student for one year (USD1000 / year/student) during training period • Ask other clubs from the district & Rotary International to join • Establish a Rotary Placement institution or partner an existing agency
  • Benefits • Raising a skilled work force in the community • Saving a family from getting poor & diseased • Raising economic standards • Improving social fabric of the society as otherwise the untrained & unemployed youth is the causes for rise in crime in the society • With every one trained youth we support a family for a lifetime and enhance the entrepreneurial character of the society • May be gain a future Rotarian who believe in “Doing Good”
