Thanks to Indian medical tourism for cost saving laparoscopic left colectomy in India - Presentation Transcript

    1. Thanks to Indian medical tourism for cost saving laparoscopic left colectomy in India. India offers laparoscopic left colectomy at very affordable and economical cost. As health care costs skyrocket, patients in the developed world are looking overseas for medical treatment. India is capitalizing on its low costs and highly trained doctors to appeal to these "medical tourists". India has fast emerged as a desirable destination for medical tourism. Indian private medical centers excel in all medical treatments and a large number of foreign patients are visiting India for treatment. Health care centers of Delhi, Kerala and Goa have best surgeons for the successful treatment of laparoscopic left colectomy in India. Medical tourism has become a common form of vacationing, and covers a broad spectrum of medical services. Medical tourism mixes leisure, fun and relaxation together with wellness and healthcare. Laparoscopic left colectomy surgery requires a higher degree of special dexterity and technical skills. The patient is placed in a lithotomy position and a 5-mm supraumbilical port is placed. Pneumoperitoneum is established, and 2 additional 5-mm ports are placed in the suprapubic midline and left lower quadrant. Another 10/12-mm port is placed in the right lower quadrant. The patient is then placed in Trendlenburg position and peritoneal attachments scored along the white line of Toldt. The left ureter is identified to prevent injury to it. The patient is then placed in reverse Trendlenburg position to mobilize the splenic flexure. The omentum is dissected off the colon in the bloodless plane using electrocautery. Once the splenic flexure is mobilized, the patient is placed again in the Trendlenburg position. The vascular pedicle is divided by ultrasonic shears or vascular stapling device. Similarly, the rectum is also divided with a linear vascular stapler. The specimen is then removed by stapling the proximal end of the bowel. Patient outcomes depend more on advanced laparoscopic skills of surgeons and adherence to accepted left colectomy surgery principal. Medical tourism in India can be broadly defined as the provision of 'cost effective' private medical care in collaboration with the tourism
    2. industry for patients needing surgical and other forms of specialized treatment for laparoscopic left colectomy. The process of healthcare tourism is jointly facilitated by the corporate sector involved in medical and healthcare as well as the tourism industry - both private and public. Many countries have developed links for speedy treatments in India for their nationals on account of the fact that in these countries one has to wait for extended periods of time to undergo operations. The lower cost includes significantly longer post- operative care in the hospital itself. The costs are usually a lot lower than even the deductible most insurance companies levy on a patient.
