We are located in Thane near Mumbai (Bombay) which is on the west coast of India
We are in a city with population of surrounded by rural, agricultural and national forest areas around us
This gives us a golden opportunity to serve urban as well as rural population
Some of our Major Projects
Elders’ Home
We plan to build and operate an elders’ home in our club area.
We will be working jointly with an institution which at present runs a residential facility for mentally challenged children. They have the land and the competency to operate a residential care facility
We can raise the funds, construct the facility and then support it financially and through volunteer work
Check Dams
There are many villages in our area which receive water for agriculture for only a part of the year i.e. during monsoon.
The villagers have to fetch drinking water from miles away, as the sources are far and between.
By building simple concrete check dams or bunds, we can create small ponds which can provide agricultural as well as drinking water.
Without these bunds, the water just runs off to back-bays and sea.
A bonus is that with these bunds, the sub-soil water level also goes up and the villagers can get drinking water right in their villages by using simple hand pumps.
Check Dams
The cost of one bund US$7,500. 00
Cost of four bore-wells with hand pump US$3,000
Villagers benefitted 800+.
Horizon
Every year we organise a painting, drawing, clay modelling and embroidery competition for special school children from all over Mumbai and suburbs. The children as well as Rotarians have a great time interacting with each other.
Van Vihar (Picnic in the woods)
Every year we organise a one day picnic for Special school children from Thane. The children put up a parade, entertainment programmes etc at a country club. We arrange entertainment programmes, games, visits by sportspersons, film or TV stars etc for them. In short, fun all around.
Gram Mangal (Village Upgradation)
Our club supports a residential school in an Adivasi (Aborigines) village.
The children have some innate abilities like talent in arts, crafts and sports
The residential school teaches skills to enhance these abilities
There is very little text book teaching
Military Recruitment
For many years, not a single person was found suitable for recruitment by the Army from the entire our Thane District.
In 1995-96 we started Army Recruitment camps. We give pre-recruitment training to aspiring, deserving and needy candidates. This has become an annual programme of our club.
Over 4000 men have joined the Armed Forces through our camps.
Military Recruitment Contd
PP Major Subhash Gavand spearheads this initiative.
In 2001-02 we felicitated Miss Sugandha Khanzode who was the first ever girl from Thane city to join the Army as a direct commissioned officer.
This drive helps needy youngsters find a career which gives them discipline, honour and pride while fulfilling a national need.
RYLA
We organise a RYLA either jointly with other Rotary Clubs in the area or by ourselves. Last year we took a group of Interactors on a 2 day nature trail where they were guided through a national park by experts on flora and fauna. In the evening till midnight the youngsters interacted with some more experts who explained to them the importance of preserving the environment around us and the multitude of vegetation and wild life which has equal right to share the biosphere as human beings. Most of the participants excelled in the quiz organised on the subject towards the end of the programme. The event was so interesting that the Interactors had to be persuaded to leave at the appointed time.

Pulse Polio
India is one of the last places where Polio is yet to be eradicated.
Our Club is putting great emphasis on Rotary International Pulse Polio drive.
The Indian Health Authorities organise a drive 6 to 10 times in a year to administer Polio Vaccine to all children below 5 years age on the same day across the country. This is followed by a mop-up house to house campaign on the next day.
Our club sends its volunteers to a total of 72 centres which administer the vaccine. We also provide snacks and lunch boxes to the officials manning the centres.
