  • AMERICAN CIVIL WAR (1861-1865)
  • - INTRODUCTION - The American Civil War(1861-1865), also known as the war between the two states,was a civil war in the history of the united states of america. Eleven southern slave states declared their secession from the united states, And formed the confederate states of america, also known as ‘confederacy’. Led by jefferson davis,the confederacy fought against the united states of America ie. The union.

TIMELINE- TIMELINE- 1787- slavery was banned in the north-west terrritory. 1793- invention of cotton gin by Eli whitney. 1804- all northern states had passed laws to abolish siavery. 1808- congress banned the african slave trade although slavery was remained legal in the south.& union&confederacy was divided by mason-dixon line. 1828 -introduction of TARRIFS,a tax implented by congress on imports. 1848- origin of free-soil party. 1854- origin of republicans.
  • 1860- presedential election of lincoln. 1861- 7 slave states had declared their secession. 1861- the revenue act introduced the income tax to help finance the war. 1861- hostilities began as confederate forces attacked at fort sumter. 17,april,1862- the bloodiest single day in the united states military history. 9,april,1865- confederate resistance ended after ROBERT.LEE surrendered.

  • 3.NATIONALISM& HONOR- IT WAS A POWERFUL FORCE IN THE 19 CENT,WITH FABMOUS SPOKESMEN LIKE ANDREW JACKSON& DANIEL WEBSTER. 4. STATES RIGHTS- THIS OR SVEREIGNTY,WAS ALWAYS MORE A MEANS THAN AN END,AN INSTRUMENT TO ACHIEVE A CERTAIN GOAL MORE THAN A PRINCIPLE. 5.FREE-SOIL- IT WAS A NORTHERN DEMAND THAT THE NEW LANDS OPENING UP IN THE WEST BE AVAILABLE TO INDEPENDENT FARMERS. 6.TARRIFS- A HIGH PROTECTIVE TAX ON IMPORTS BY CONGRESS IN 1828. 7.ELECTION OF LINCOLNS- THE ELECTION IN NOV.1860 WAS THE FINAL TRIGGER FOR SECESSION.
  • 8.BATTLE OF FORT SUMTER- 12,APRIL,1861 CONFEDERATES ATTACK ON FORT SUMTER. CENTRES WERE SECESSION BEGINS- 1.SOUTH CAROLINA- DID MORE TO ADVANCE NULLIFICATION AND SECESSION THAN ANY OTHER SOUTHERN STATES. 2.THE CONFEDERACY- SEVEN DEEP SOUTH COTTON STATES SECEDED BY FEB,1861,STARTING WITH SOUTH CAROLINA,MISSISSIPPI,FLORIDA,ALABAMA GEORGIA LOUISIANA &TEXAS.
  • 3.THE UNION STATES- 23 STATES REMAINED LOYAL TO UNION SUCH AS CALIFORNIA,INDIANA KANSAS, MARYLAND, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK OHIO,ETC. 4.THE BORDER STATES- THESE STATES IN THE UNION WERE WEST VIRGINIA,MARYLAND, MISSOURI ETC.
