  5. 5. INTRODUCTION Slavery was a unique institution in which masters and black slaves were firmly bound with each other in a patriarchal relationship.

Beginning of slavery in America . <ul><li>Slavery began in america </li></ul><ul><li>two hundred years before </li></ul><ul><li>the independence. </li></ul><ul><li>The first known slave trader </li></ul><ul><li>was Dutchman of ware sold twenty negro slaves in Jamestown. </li></ul><ul><li>From 16 th to 19 th centuries 12 million Africans were shipped as slaves to American. </li></ul><ul><li>Slavery was a contentious issue in the politics of the United States. </li></ul>

Causes of slavery <ul><li>The European emigrants found the climate of america hot and they employed the native and african negros to do hard work. </li></ul><ul><li>The process of spinning industry which increased the demand of slaves to work in the cotton farms. </li></ul><ul><li>Good quality soil for plantation of high value cash crops such as tobacco, cotton, sugar and coffee. </li></ul>

Life of a slave . <ul><li>Most of the slaves worked </li></ul><ul><li>on farms in groups. </li></ul><ul><li>They looked after orchards, woods, and tended the cattle's. </li></ul><ul><li>They worked on cotton farm. </li></ul><ul><li>Old slaves who were unfit for hard work did the baby sitting. </li></ul><ul><li>Slaves were treated as the hereditary property and their masters had the right to sell or buy them. </li></ul>

Abolition of slavery <ul><li>American fought for their independence for three decades between 1763 and 1793. </li></ul><ul><li>13 colonies declared their independence on 4 th July, 1776. </li></ul><ul><li>The Northern states led an anti-slavery campaign and urged all the states to implement the declaration. </li></ul><ul><li>The ordinance of 1787 had abolished slavery in the whole territory. </li></ul><ul><li>Later, Abraham Lincoln pays a prominent role in eradication of slavery from America . </li></ul>
