  • 3. Why is plagiarism important?Plagiarism is the theft of intellectual property.Plagiarism is cheating.Plagiarism may result in receiving an “F” or Zero forthe assignment.
  • 4. Plagiarism-PunishmentLegal-Misdemeanor, punishable by fines of anywherebetween $100 and $50,000, and up to 1 year in jail.Institutional-Many companies will not tolerateplagiarism and you will lose your job.
  • 5. Fair UseFair use is the right to use copyrightedmaterial without permission or paymentunder some circumstances.
  • 6. How do I avoid Plagiarism?Use your OWN words and ideas!Always give credit to your source.If you use someone’s exact words put them in quotesand give them credit!
  • 7. Fair Use What can you do?You may use portions, 10% of acquired copyrightedmaterials in academic and multimedia work.Single photographs/illustrations may be used in theirentirety, but no more than 5 images, by an artist orphotographer. No more that 15 images from acollection or 10%.You may use up to 10% of copyrighted musicalcomposition.
  • 8. How can I be safe?Always cite your work you borrow from Internet.Give the author, artist, graphic designer, photographercredit for their hard work!Make sure you ask your teacher how you cite your workproperly!Don’t ABUSE fair use-THINK, did I use more than10%?
