Tube and railway stations were replaced by the

29.  When the EiffelTower opened in Paris in 1889, British noses were put
out of joint. Sir EdwardWatkin, a Liberal Unionist MP, dreamed up a
way for London to hit back. He announced that he intended to build a
tower 150ft taller than the 984ft Eiffel had managed.
The chosen site was an area of northwest London.
An open competition was held which inspired some mind-boggling
schemes. One tower, twice the height of Eiffel's and costing a projected
£1m. One was a vertical village, containing flats, offices, pubs, courts
and a library.
After all this, the winning design looked very like Eiffel's tower, only
taller, with four levels instead of three.

scheduled to join Major League Soccer (MLS) is pending
negotiations over stadium financing and location.
