out of joint. Sir EdwardWatkin, a Liberal Unionist MP, dreamed up a
way for London to hit back. He announced that he intended to build a
tower 150ft taller than the 984ft Eiffel had managed.

An open competition was held which inspired some mind-boggling
schemes. One tower, twice the height of Eiffel's and costing a projected
£1m. One was a vertical village, containing flats, offices, pubs, courts

Sadly, in 1894, work was stopped and in 1907 the half complete tower
