  • 5. Technology Changes Quickly  Early days: record live TV onto 16mm (kinscope)  1950’s Video Tape Recorder (VTR or tape deck)  Video Cassette Recorder (VCR)  Camcorders  Analog to Digital  Current HD  Future 4 and 5K
  • 6. Video Format  How many lines or pixels form an image  Shape of the image  How the signal is compressed  NTSC National Television System Committee – 1 Format  ATSC Advanced Television System Committee -18 Formats  Pixel: The brightness and color of that part of the image

Video Format  Standard Definition: 4:3 aspect ratio (720 x 480 pixels)  High Definition: 16:9 aspect ratio (1920x1080 or 1280x720)  4k 4096x2160  Progressive vs. Interlaced Progressive: All pixels in each frame are captured at once Interlaced: Each field contains half the horizontal video lines.  Frame rate: The number of frames recorded each second 29.97 (30) 24 Film 25 FPS (PAL/SECAM)
