The Carolingian Empire <ul><li>After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Frankish Kingdom was established in France. </li></ul><ul><li>But the kings were weak and they handed power to the palace butlers (=mayordomos de palacio) . </li></ul><ul><li>Charles Martel , who defeated the Muslims in Poitiers (France), was one of the most importants butlers. </li></ul>
  8. 8. The Carolingian Dinasty <ul><li>The son of Charles Martel, Pippin the short , of the Carolingian Dinasty, became king. </li></ul><ul><li>The son of Pippin the short was Charlemagne (Carlomagno), who wanted to restore the Western Roman Empire. </li></ul>
  9. 9. The Carolingian Dinasty <ul><li>Charlemagne conquered vast territories… </li></ul>Because of this he was crowned by the Pope as the new Emperor of the West in the year 800.

Life in the Carolingian Empire <ul><li>ECONOMY and SOCIETY </li></ul><ul><li>The main economic activities were agriculture and stockbreeding ( =ganadería ). </li></ul><ul><li>In the country, landlords dominated over lands and peasants (= campesinos ) </li></ul><ul><li>The trade was very slow because communication networks had deteriorated </li></ul><ul><li>CULTURE </li></ul><ul><li>Charlemagne created schools in cathedrals and monasteries . The most important school was the Academy of Aquisgrane. </li></ul><ul><li>The monks copied books by hand </li></ul>
  11. 11. - Charlemagne died in 814, leaving the Empire to his son Louis the Pious ( Luis el Piadoso ) - Louis the Pious, with the treaty of Verdun (843) divided the Empire among his three sons : Charles, Lothair, and Louis This was the end of the Carolingian Empire.
