    • Third son of the high – ranking military figure Arthur Macarthur
    • 1880 – born in Little Rock, Arkansas
    • Graduated first at West Point Military Academy
    • 1903 – gained commission into engineers
    • 1905 – sent to Tokyo to his father
  • 3. Douglas
    • 1917 – sent to France
      • Second battle of Marne
    • 1918 – youngest divisional commander in the field
    • 1930 to 1935 – Chief of Staff
    • After Pearl Harbor
      • Put in charge of the Philippines
      • He failed

    • America’s senior military commander
    • Led America’s withdrawal from Philippines with his famous quote
          • “ I shall return”
    • He did fulfill his promise

    • The withdrawal only made him want to recover the islands more.
    • Came up with “island – hopping”
      • Meant that Americans took the longer more important island captured by the Japanese, left the smaller ones to “willow on the vine”
