• Today we are both empowered by laptops connected to wireless high speed networks and swamped by information that that provides. For many this is a problem including organizations that collect data. However, if we could easily sort through this mess we have an opportunity.

    • 1. open web platform open water data apps through API A not-for-profit project funded by Western Economic Diversification, Cybera Inc. and University of Lethbridge. Led by University of Lethbridge, Cybera Inc., and Alberta WaterPortal. Alex Joseph Executive Director – Water and Environmental Hub Cybera Inc. • 2.

In Alberta, there are over 1,200 water-related organizations with different stakeholders and perspectives on the province ’s water challenges, opportunities and solutions.

Each is creating local and unique programs, websites and tools to reach out to their communities of interest

key challenges How to connect this collective community of water stakeholders and all of this water data and knowledge… in a way that adds value, avoids duplication, and is complimentary to the goals and work that each of these groups are pursuing . Research Gov’t Watershed Groups Industry Public First Nations Water Users NGO’s
    • 3. key challenges The need to collaborate and share knowledge is becoming more acute as governments, environmental groups, industry, scientists, and others are being called upon to build and strengthen environmental and conservation actions and plans… … and as the issue of environmental stewardship and protection is becoming a key public concern and is creating increasing demand for more data, information sharing and discussion from a whole new community of people that were not previously engaged.
    • 4. key challenges Providing improved transparency and access to available water and environmental data, information and knowledge is a crucial first step in building multi-stakeholder and collaborative partnerships… … and making better decisions on where to focus scarce resources (priorities) on policy, research, technology commercialization, industry investment, and public engagement.
    • 5. “ … wouldn ’ t it be amazing to have one platform for climate and hydrometric data ” – Jennifer Allen (SFU) @ CWRA2011
    • 6. “ … the arrival of Web Services Hubs ” – David Maidment (CUAHSI) @ CWRA2011
    • 7. the beginning…

Alberta WaterPortal Alberta ’ s largest community-based web portal focused on water; Non advocacy; Reaching out, connecting divergent interests and content sources (12,000 data sources and growing)

Web-based State of the Watershed tools interactive and adaptive watershed management tool. Brings together current data and information on a basin ’ s water quality and quantity, its landscape and biological community, and land use activities

    • 8. | 2/3 2043 MB - Download Phone Dave for data
    • 9. problem with water data

Local - majority of water data is stored on paper, local computers, controlled organizational databases -> restricted by storage medium

Stranded - little water data is available online, what is available is piecemeal -> not web connected

Hidden, Dispersed - most of what is available is on many different websites, often obscured within those websites -> dispersed widely

Opaque - most of what is available is only in downloadable format -> all or nothing

Custom Format - most are not standardized -> custom structures

Human Required - virtually none are available as an API -> requires human intervention

    • 10. the dream

All water data is available through web services - including historical, new data can be found automatically

(at least) One great node where one can efficiently search and find water data one is looking for

Data can be converted/transformed on the fly

User can easily mash together datasets

Users have access to great tools and can custom build tools

Users can integrate water data with other types of data from other sources through API

    • 11. Water and Environmental Hub

Leverages the work of the WaterPortal

Makes more water data available

Makes it searchable under one roof

Makes it distributable/transferrable to others

Significantly lowers cost of working with water data
