  • 1. What to do when…<br />An overview of the Resident Assistant response protocol<br />
  • 2. Scenario 1 <br /><ul><li>PS receives an anonymous tip regarding a party with a keg in a TH. PS contacts the RAs on rounds to inform them of the situation. RAs and PS meet outside the TH. Off campus visitors are present. </li></ul>At least one person is underage (NOT 21):<br />If all are 21 or older:<br /><ul><li>Documentthe situation as a noise violation
  • 3. Record the location and ask the group to keep it down; tell them if you have to came back that you will break up the party
  • 4. If you have to come back ask all non-residents of that unit to leave
  • 5. Call Public Safety and Graduate Hall Director (GHD) if students are not compliant </li></ul>Document the situation as an alcohol policy violation<br />Get IDs, record all names and ask all guests to leave <br />Confiscate and dispose of alcohol<br />Call Public Safety and Graduate Hall Director (GHD) if students are not compliant <br />

Scenario 2 <br /><ul><li>RAs conducting rounds are stopped by residents and told of another resident who is throwing up in the bathroom due to drinking earlier in the evening.</li></ul>RA<br />Call Public Safety<br />Call 911<br />Notify GHD<br />Notify professional staff<br />Document the situation<br />
  • 7. Scenario 3 <br /><ul><li>PS receives a call regarding a smell of marijuana in VH hallway </li></ul>RA<br />Document the situation<br />Notify GHD<br />Investigate w/PS<br />Assist PS as a witness<br />
  • 8. Scenario 4<br /><ul><li>RAs on rounds are stopped by residents and told that a resident in a particular room is partying and smoking pot right now. RAs radio PS.</li></ul>RA<br />Notify GHD<br />Meet PS & GHD outside the room<br />Document the situation<br />Assist PS/GHDs as a witness<br />
  • 9. Scenario 5 <br /><ul><li>RAs are conducting rounds and come across a group of 20-30 students behind CH yelling loudly at each other. A student lounges at another student and hits him in the face. RAs radio PS to report the situation.</li></ul>RA<br />Document the situation<br />Verbally instruct students to stop<br />Do not try to physically separate the students<br />Call GHD<br />Ask victims if they would like medical help, or the police<br />Issue no contact order(s) as appropriate<br />
  • 10. Scenario 6 <br /><ul><li>RAs are contacted by a resident who states that his/her significant other hit them and pushed them against the wall. Student has red marks on arm. RAs radio PS to report the situation. RAs are in the room, PS report to the room.</li></ul>RA<br />Document the situation<br />Help resident feel safe & comfortable<br />Call GHD<br />Work with victim to ensure they feel safe on the campus<br />Issue no contact order(s) as appropriate<br />
  • 11. Scenario 7 <br /><ul><li>A resident contacts an RA and states that their roommate has a weapon in the room (knife/gun). RA contacts PS .</li></ul>RA<br />Document the situation<br />Call GHD<br />
  • 12. Scenario 8<br /><ul><li>PS receives a phone call regarding a resident. Caller states they are concerned about a well-being of their child/friend/significant other. They may want to harm themselves. PS notifies RAs on duty.</li></ul>RA<br />Document the situation<br />Witness/Assist in finding and identifying student<br />Call GHD<br />Notify Health & Wellness staff for evaluation <br />
  • 13. Scenario 9 <br /><ul><li>PS receives a phone call from a resident stating that an ex-boyfriend/girlfriend has been stalking them and they are afraid this individual may come to campus. PS notifies RAs on duty.</li></ul>PS asks student to come to office and file an official report.<br />PS informs Residence Life staff with individual description, car information, etc.<br />RAs:Watch for that person while on rounds and if seen contact PS immediately<br />
  • 14. Scenario 10 <br /><ul><li>A fire alarm sounds and residents evacuate the building. Upon inspection a pipe burst in the building and flooded a hallway.</li></ul>RA<br />Call GHD<br />Call Professional Staff member<br />Help manage displaced residents (move to another location, ex: student center)<br />Help office communicate with residents<br />
  • 15. Scenario 11<br /><ul><li>A person contacts PS and states they left their laptop in a student’s room. (The student is not present to let their friend back in.)</li></ul>RA<br />Help the student find the resident to the unlock the room. <br />Do not unlock the room.<br />
  • 16. Scenario 12<br /><ul><li>Resident contacts the RA about an overflowing toilet</li></ul>RA<br />Call Public Safety to notify the Facilities on-call staff<br />Check back with resident to ensure toilet was fixed<br />If not fixed in a reasonable amount of time call GHD <br />
