  • 1. Facebook’s Open Graph Internet Goes Social Abbi Siler alt.Consulting [email_address] Twitter: asiler112
  • 2. What is Open Graph?
    • Allows websites & mobile applications to tailor offers, features, and specials to the individual, by sharing information (even if you have never visited the site).
    • When you sign onto Facebook, other sites like CNN, Pandora, and more have access to your preferences to provide you a customized experience.
    • Facebook takes your privacy preferences and shares any data allowed with websites to bring a personalized, and open form of internet to you.
  • 3. What Information Is Shared?
    • Based on your privacy preferences, Facebook shares the brands or pages you like, the public officials or articles you like, the people you are connecting with on Facebook, and the relationships you form via social media.
    • For example:
    • When you connect to CNN through your Facebook Profile, CNN will provide you news articles that your friends like along with articles that may be about your state or area. They also will provide you with topics and news that may interest you based on your interests listed on your profile and the pages you ‘like.’
  • 4. Open Graph = Personalized Web
    • Pandora : Online music radio, Open Graph takes your Music ‘Likes’ from Facebook and build a personal online radio station for YOU. (you can also listen to your friend’s music, too)
    • Yelp : Music Venues & Restaurants you ‘Like’ on Facebook—gives you latest specials, news, or concerts—also provides local suggestions based on your ‘likes’
    • And more, Web Developers can apply the Open Graph to sites with ease and simplicity .
  • 5. Facebook Connect: Site Tour
  • 6. Instant Personalization
  • 7. Social Plugins: The Like Button
    • The new Open Graph isn’t just for the Big Companies—local business can take advantage!
    • The Like Button can be added to any website, simple as 1-2-3!
    • Along with the Social API—Any website can be open with Facebook!
    • Benefits:
    • - Brand Awareness
    • - Content Sharing
    • - Product Reviews
    • - Specials/Offers
    • (more accessible)
    • - Personal Interaction
    • - Social Referrals
  • 8. How Does This Affect Privacy?
    • Before, Facebook API could only store your information up to 24 hours from when you shared any content.
    • Data Storage Restriction is now gone.
    • Don’t Be Alarmed: This does not change anything, most developers were using ‘work arounds’ to get your Facebook Info already. (This makes the process more positive and less negative)
    • Facebook Login: Now available to major sites. (Very cool for those who surf the web, read the web, and share the web) You can login to Facebook without going to Facebook.
  • 9. Facebook Community Pages
    • The newest addition to Pages on Facebook that helps local business are Community Pages!
    • Use your keywords: If you are are talking about services or events in your community, type the name of your town & city!
    • Facebook uses keywords: Jonesboro, Arkansas and creates a central hub that collects any status, event or news article submitted on Facebook about ‘Jonesboro, Arkansas.’
    • Same goes for Business Names: You may have a Community Page created by Facebook about your company—to see search Facebook—they are also created if you list your Company as your employer in your personal profile on Facebook.
    • Let’s Look at alt.Consulting .
    • Submitting Content & Official Website to Wikipedia—to optimize your FREE Business Community Page!
  • 10. Just Remember:
    • Most of the Facebook Social Graph is very positive, and GREAT for the future of the internet & Online Marketing!
    • Use Your Noggin’: Don’t share or say or ‘Like’ anything on the internet that you wouldn’t want your face next to on a billboard.
    • The Internet is becoming more OPEN & SOCIAL: Don’t Be Afraid, Just Be Educated.
    • When Logging Into Facebook on other sites, or Using The ‘Connect to Facebook’ Online: Be Aware The Data You ‘Like’ or ‘Share’ will have a higher probability of being shared, than on your actual Facebook. While you have Privacy Settings on Facebook.com, when you choose to LogIn or Connect on other sites, you sacrifice some or all of those preferences.
    • ( This isn’t always bad, but be aware)
