    • A new way of communicating online.
    • A platform for users to generate and share content.
    • Real time information sharing.
    • The power of social media is with the wisdom of the crowd.
    • It is the perfect word of mouth environment and we must join the conversation.

    • Facebook has more than 500 million active users. That’s a 40% increase of users in less than half a year.
    • Twitter   now has  105 registered users . Twitter has 300,000 new users per day.
    • YouTube Surpasses Two Billion Video Views Daily. With a 1.1% monthly growth.

    • LinkedIn has over 50m members worldwide . This is an increase of 1m members since July/August last year.
    • Flickr hosts more than 4bn images. A massive jump from the previous 3.6bn I wrote about.
    • Wikipedia has more than 14m articles , meaning that it’s 85,000 contributors have written nearly a million new posts in six months.

    • There are more than 100 million active users currently accessing Facebook through their mobile devices.
    • Twitter experienced a 347% increase in mobile browser usage
    • Overall, 30.8 % of smartphone users accessed social networking sites via their mobile browser in January 2010. That does not even include access via mobile applications.

    • YouTube, the number 1 channel for online videos view, Surpasses Two Billion Video Views Daily.
    • Yahoo is the second channel for online videos views and Facebook is third with almost 4% monthly increase.
    • UK - 5.5 billion videos were viewed in the UK in February 2010, up from 4 billion in February 2009. That’s 37 percent up from last year.

    • The average time spent on social networking sites today is 5.5 hours per person monthly. More than 35m Facebook users update their status each day.
    • Microsoft predicts that the Internet will overtake TV as the most consumed form of media in Europe by the middle of 2010.

    • Users are talking about your brand online. That is a fact. You should join the conversation and influence it.
    • Your competitors are reaching out to customers online and engaging in conversations. You should use social media to monitor competitors’ activities.
    • Social Media is a powerful viral marketing tool to quickly reach a large audience.
    • Social media is now part of PR/Branding/Marketing – Your audience is out there and social media is growing. Keep that in mind when planning your outreach activities.
