Slide 2: Talking about young urban style, talking about our own casual style Berlin, 18:00 p.m. September 2007

Slide 22: sicko 19 vs / New Rave LA COSA EMPEZÓ A GESTARSE EN LONDRES UNOS CUANTOS AÑOS ATRÁS, PERO AHORA HA EXPLOTADO SIN REMEDIO EN MEDIO MUNDO: BIENVENIDOS A LA ESCENA NEW RAVE, LA PENÚLTIMA SENSACIÓN ESTÉTICO-MUSICAL ACUÑADA POR LA PRENSA. IT ALL STARTED BACK IN LONDON QUITE A FEW YEARS AGO NOW, BUT TODAY IT’S EXPLODED ONTO THE SCENE IN LOADS OF COUNTRIES ALL OVER THE WORLD: WELCOME TO THE NEW RAVE SCENE, THE PENULTIMATE MUSICAL- FASHION SENSATION THAT THE PRESS HAS TAKEN TO HEART. PULL AND BEAR HAS DECIDED TO JOIN IN, REINTERPRETING AND REVAMPING THE LOOK WITH A “TRENDY” LIMITED EDITION COLLECTION UNDER THE SICKO 19 LABEL. Clandestine raves in squats and clubs not much bigger than your sitting room; boys and girls wearing impossible combinations, caked in makeup, glitter and glamour. Colour and fluorescence. And Smiley’s got that look on his face again whilst sweaty bodies heave on the dance floor. Because this is all about dance. Just the other day we were calling it disco-punk or punk-funk, but now the names preferred by many are electro-rock or indie-rave: a touch of late 80s - early 90s house, combined with a bit of the Manchester sound, without forgetting those guitars of course. Thudding repetitive rhythms, heavy basses, lots of cheek and ready to party. Prodigy and Daft Punk are the names to listen out for, together with a fistful of bands that are guaranteed to turn up the heat. They’re not all there, but below you’ll find a quick-hit list that’ll get you started with the new sounds of fashion.

Slide 23: The sunshine underground This combo from Leeds is a definite favourite amongst the fans of these new sounds. You can hear the influence of Daft Punk and Happy Mondays on their debut album, “Raise the alarm” (City Rockers, 2006). Man like me His greatest achievement www.myspace.com/thesunshineunderground to date: taking part in Tate Tracks, a curious experiment organised by London’s Tate Gallery, in which various artists put music to a work of art. Or Cansei de ser sexy New rave sounds, Brazilian perhaps not. The album: “Myths of the Near style. A practically all-girl combo (the drummer is Future” (Universal, 2007). the only boy) that’s becoming hugely popular Hadouken! The name comes from Street Fighter and their songs www.myspace.com/klaxons internationally thanks to their provocative lyrics are full of Game Boy sounds. Sub Pop/Everlasting new kids on the scene but NME is already singing their praises, published their first album last year. whilst Pop magazine claims that they’re next year’s Klaxons. www.myspace.com/canseidesersexy For the time being they’ve published a couple of singles. www.myspace.com/hadoukenuk Justice A remix of Simian, Franz Ferdinand, Soulwax or Britney Spears. The spirit of Daft Punk revamped and updated by a couple of French guys who are behind one of the best albums out this summer, “†” (Ed Banger, 2007). www.myspace.com/etjusticepourtous Shitdisco They admit to being influenced by Prodigy and Gang of Four, but in actual fact this Glasgow-based group is all too reminiscent of The Rapture. But what the heck, they’re top of the list Crystal castles A Canadian duo that oscillates in the popularity stakes. Their first album, between super sweet and mind-blowing punk “Kingdom of Fear”, was launched this year by sounds. After just a couple of singles, they’re way Fierce Panda. www.myspace.com/shitdisco Digitalism A German duo that has received up there on the ultra-trendies’ lists. rap-turous praise from the specialised press www.myspace.com/crystalcastles New young pony club This English combo got together following the launch of their album “Idealism” in 2004, but we’ve had to wait until this summer for their (Kitsuné /Virgin).“Pogo” is a superb track. first album, entitled “Fantastic Playroom” (Island / www.myspace.com/digitalism Universal). Slide 25: fuck hugo ignacio iriarte héctor muelas Yes, Berlin is still a cheap city. That’s one of the reasons for its serve traditional Japanese food at absurdly low prices. It’s one success, although that looks set to finish soon. Hector has no of the few places in Berlin apart from the luxury restaurants doubts about it “rents are not the only cheap thing here, buying where you can get fresh fish every day. And the Lebensmittel, is amazing. There’s no other European capital with these prices in Rochstr, a small family run place where you can eat traditional and I don’t think it’s going to last much longer if you think that German food made with organic products”. A club: there’s a despite the crisis and the relocation of industry, Berlin is still the whole bunch of DJs here and the scene here is huge, but at the economic powerhouse of Europe”. Silvia, fashion designer and same time it’s very changeable, the people here follow a scene creative consultant for PotiPoti, says much the same thing: “the or a DJ or a group more than a particular place; very often the cheap rents here are starting to go up now because a lot of places here are one-nighters. But there are places that’ll never people from outside are moving in; it’s getting harder and harder let you down. Cookies on Tuesdays and Thursdays. White Trash, to find somewhere”. But so you get an idea of what things are 8mm, Magnet, Weekend…” One of the resident Djs here is Hugo like right now, Hector explains: “you can find a flat of about 80 Capablanca a.k.a. Everyone you know lives here and you can go from one place to another in a As for good art galleries, Hector mentions the “Contemporary Hector Muelas is one of the many Spaniards that have made Berlin their home. 27 years old and with three years experience working ‘kurzstrecke’, which is like a short distance taxi that costs three Fine Arts, Neu, Peres Projects, Giti Nourbakhsch and Arndt & for Vice magazine, he edits the Spanish language version, which went on sale for the first time in July. Hector is also editor of the and a half euros, it doesn’t matter where you go as long as it’s Partner”. Ignacio opts for the “more mainstream places” German and Austrian editions. “Like a lot of people of my generation, I was lucky enough to go ex-pat and not end up working as less than three kilometres away. Another interesting area is especially the Zimmerstr galleries. It’s worth having a look the- a DJ”, says Hector with some irony. Hector’s arrival in Berlin was accidental, a result of the post grad studies he was doing at the time. Berlin’s We asked Hector to do a quick tour of his favourite places in a city where you can go out every night of the week, you never feel alone here, everyone’s doing something, it’s cheap to live here Berlin. We started with accommodation. “If you’re on a tight One final question for Hector. A good park to wander around as well, everything works 24 hours a day and you rediscover the city every day because it’s huge. Ignacio Iriarte, a visual artist living and working in Platz right in the centre of Mitte.
