  • 2. THE FIRST FLEET
    • On 18 th of August 1786 the British Government decided to send the convicts to Botany Bay.
    • By October 1786 more than 200 marines had volunteered for Botany Bay duty.
    • In the first fleet the were about 550 male convicts and 190 females were also included, plus some children.
  • 3. WHO WERE THE CONVICTS
    • The mayority of convicts transported to New South Wales, Came from London or other parts of southern England.
    • Prisoners convicted for the first time were not usually sentenced to transportation.
  • 4. THE VOYAGE
    • The departure of the fleet has been greeted with fear and trepidation by the convicts and marines.
    • They were embarking on the longest voyage ever attempted by such a large group.
  • 5. DIET
    • Most food that the convicts ate on board were flour, peas, rice, butter, bread, soup, cheese, salted beef and pork but the only thing they drank was water.
