  1. 1. Tsunamis By Naomi Nguyen What was the biggest tsunami? And how much damage did it cause?
  2. 2. <ul><li>On Boxing Day 2004, an undersea earthquake, that was 9.15 on the Richter scale, triggered waves up to 49 feet high. </li></ul>
  3. 3. <ul><li>These waves hit the coasts of Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand and other countries. </li></ul>
  4. 4. <ul><li>Over 310’000 people were killed and many more injured in many different countries. This tsunami is known as one of the deadliest disasters in history. </li></ul>
  5. 5. <ul><li>The earthquake was caused by the Indian plate sliding under Sumatra (part of the Eurasian plate). </li></ul>
  6. 6. <ul><li>Water levels in California exceeded 40cm in height, and New Jersey saw water level fluctuations as great as 34cm. </li></ul>
  7. 7. <ul><li>The tsunami wave travelled the globe and in the Pacific and other places, it was measured by tide gauges. </li></ul>
  8. 8. <ul><li>The tsunami happened exactly 1 year after the 2003 Bam earthquake, and 2 years before the 2006 Hengchun earthquake. </li></ul>
