    2. Convicts at King George Sound
      • The very first convicts to arrive in Western Australia were convicts from settlements in New South Wales, sent to King George Sound to start a new settlement in the year 1826. At that time the western third of Australia was unowned by Squatters that travelled around Australia, the land known as New Holland . Afraid that France would claim New Holland the Governor of NSW, Ralph Darling, sent Major Edmund Lockyer to claim New Holland with troopers and 23 convicts.
    3. Free settlement to penal colony
      • In December 1828 the British Colonies Office agreed to establish a colony in Western Australia at Swan River. In June I829 the Swan River colony was aphishly named a free colony. Then in 1834 Captain Frederick Irwin suggested that the colony should take some Indian convicts.
    4. Convict era
      • In 1850 to 1868, 9721 convicts were transported to Western Australia on 43 convict ship voyages. However the colony requested that there would be no female convicts, no political prisoners and no convicts that have committed a serious crime be taken to the colony. The last ship to transport convicts to Western Australia was The Hougoumont on the 10th of January 1868.

    5. Convict life
      • Most convicts in Western Australia spent very little time in jail. Convicts who were stationed at Fremantle were housed in the Convict Establishment. Many convicts were stationed in work groups in remote locations around Australia, there were many chances to escape and many break outs did occur.
    6. End to transportation
      • Convict transportation to Western Australia ended in1868. Even though transportation stopped, by the end of 1868 there were 3158 convicts in the convict system.
    7. Convict Ships to Western Australia
      • 43 ships transported convicts to Western Australia. They came from many different countries such as Singapore, London and many more. The names of some of the ships are Scindian,Hashemy, Mermaid, Pyrenees, Minden, Morion, William Jardine, Dudbrook, Robert Small, Phoebe Dunbar, Clara, Adelaide, Nile, City of Places and many more.
