At that time the western third of Australia was unowned by Squatters that travelled around Australia, the land known as New Holland . Afraid that France would claim New Holland the Governor of NSW, Ralph Darling, sent Major Edmund Lockyer to claim New Holland with troopers and 23 convicts.
