  • 4. central nervous system Brain & Spinal Cord
  • 5. brain • contains about 100 billion neurons
  • 6. 3 main regions of brain cerebrum cerebellum brain stem
  • 7. cerebrum • largest part of brain • interprets input from senses • controls movement of skeletal muscles • divided into right half & left half – right half creativity & artistic ability – left half math skills, speech, writing, logical thinking
  • 8. cerebrum
  • 9. cerebellum • muscular coordination • balance
  • 10. brainstem • controls involuntary actions –breathing, heartbeat
  • 11. peripheral nervous system • all the nerves located outside of central nervous system • divided into 2 groups: 1. somatic system- controls voluntary actions 2. autonomic system- controls involuntary actions
  • 12. reflex • automatic response that occurs very rapidly & without conscious control
  • 13. nervous system injuries 1. concussion= bruiselike injury of brain 2. spinal cord injury= spinal cord is cut or crushed
