  • 1. The desert is found in northern Africa, western North America, western Asia, the center of Australia, and on the west coast of South America. There are many animals in the desert. Some are very large, like the kangaroo or the gazelle. Both are big and have to travel long distances for water at a water hole, or an oasis. Camels are also extremely big. They have one or two humps used for storing water and food. For this reason camels need very little water. Camels were often used as transportation by people of the desert. Another fairly large animal is the addax. The addax is a desert antelope. They live in the Sahara Desert. All addaxes are herbivores. There are less than 200 of them left because of hunting and tourists.
  • 2. Climate and Habitat
    • Sand covers only 20 percent of Earth's deserts.
    • Oases are vegetated areas moistened by springs, wells, or by irrigation. Many are artificial. Oases are often the only places in deserts that support crops and permanent habitation.
    • The average temperature in dry deserts ranges from 80*F to 120*F
    • Rain storms rarely occur in the desert
    • Sand dunes are common in deserts and provide homes to many desert animals
    • Plants like cactus are the only plants that can survive in the horrendous conditions
  • 3. Global Warming
    • Global warming is when the average temperature of the earth increases over time.
    • Global warming affects the ozone layer by melting glaciers in the artic. Which has a ripple affect on the earth so it gets warmer.
  • 4. Plants of the Desert
    • Not all plants can survive in the scorching desert heat. It’s too unbearable. The following plants and plant like organisms are the ones that can.
    • Senita Cactus- It has little rose like plants and is covered with spike like thorns. It also contains water.
    • Blue Phacelia- This a little blue flower that grows on a bush.
    • Desert Paintbrush- A redish-orange plant that is most recognizable flower in the desert.
    • Fishhook Cactus- This plant really doesn’t look like a fish hook at all. It is gray, orange and purple. It looks like a blow fish.
    • Winterfat- The Winterfat is a plant that looks like rough and dirty cotton.
    • Showy Four O’Clock- A wildflower that violet flower that can be mistaken for a lily
