  • 2. STORY OF ADAM (AS) – THE BEGINNING OF MAN’S JOURNEY THE BEGINNING OF THE CREATION AND THE CREATION OF ADAM (A.S) : Abu Haraira reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) took hold of my hands and said: Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, created the clay on Saturday and He created the mountains on Sunday and He created the trees on Monday and He created the things entailing labour on Tuesday and created light on Wednesday and He caused the animals to spread on Thursday and created Adam (A.S) after 'Asr on Friday; the last creation at the last hour of the hours of Friday, i.e. between afternoon and night. (Sahih Muslim) Who Is Adam A.S? Adam (A.S) was Allah tala’s revered and Chosen Prophet. (Ale-‘Imran 3:33, Sahih Ibn Hibban, Kitaab ut Taareeq, Sanad Sahih) Adam’s A.S Creation with Clay: And (remember) when your Lord said to the angels: "I am going to create a man (Adam) from sounding clay of altered black smooth mud. So, when I have fashioned him completely and breathed into him (Adam) the soul which I created for him, then fall (you) down prostrating yourselves unto him." (Al-Hijr, 15:28-29, Al-A’raf, 7:11-12) The Prophet (S) said: "Allah has created Adam from a handful (soil) which He had gathered from all over the earth. That is how the children of Adam came according to the (colour and nature of the) earth. There are white among them, as well as red and black, and cross colours. There are those among them who are of bad nature and good nature, soft as well as harsh and in between". Abu Dawood, Tirmidhi (sanad Sahih ), Al-Hakim. And indeed We created man (Adam) out of an extract of clay (water and earth). (Al-Mu’minoon, 23:12) When Allah mixed the dust with water, it turned into potter's clay that makes a sound. It was fermented and had a smell. From the clay Allah created Adam. He moulded his form with His own hands. (Al-hijr 15:28, Saad 38:75, 55:14):
  • 3. Adam A.S Shaped into a Human Being: So Allah shaped Adam into a human being, but he remained a figure of clay for a period of time. Allah tala left Adam (A.S) there for some time and then He (swt) made Iblis go around him (Adam) and examine him. When Iblis saw that Adam (A.S) was hollow, he realized that he cannot resist temptation and that he can deceive him. (Sahih Muslim, Kitab al Barr, Chapter on creation of man) Adam A.S a living Human Being: Then Allah tala commanded this figure of clay to become alive human by blowing spirit (soul) into his body. This figure of clay upon hearing the command turned into human form. (Ale imran 3:59, As-Saafaat 37:82) Adam A.S was brought into human form (of existence) on Friday after Asr. (related by Muslim, Abu Dawud, an-Nasa'i, and at-Tirmidhi sanad sahih). When Allah tala created Adam A.S and breathed spirit into his body then it caused him (Adam A.S) to sneeze. He said: Alhamdulillaah (all praise belongs to Allah) with Allah’s leave and Allah tala replied : yarhamu kallah (Your Lord has granted you mercy). (Sahih Ibn Hibban, Kitab ul taareeq, sanad Hasan) ALLAH’S PROMISE TO ADAM A.S: When Allah tala created Adam A.S, He said: “O Adam! One thing is for Me and one thing is for you and one is between Me and you that We will share. The thing that is for Me is that - you worship Me alone and do not associate anyone with Me in the least. The thing which is for you is that-whatever deed you perform, I will reward you for that and I will forgive you. The thing that We both would share is that—Your question and your invocation and My acceptance; i.e granting you what you have invoked me for. (Baihaqi, kitaab ul Asmaa wa sifaat, sanad Hasan) TESTIFICATION FOR IBLIS: (IBLIS FAILED THE TEST BY USING HIS REASONING) Then following Allah’s command, all the angels prostrated before Adam (A.S) except Iblis (Satan), he refused to be of those who prostrate. Allah tala asked iblis: "What prevented you (O Iblis) that you did not prostrate, when I commanded you?" Iblis said: "I am better than him (Adam), You created me from fire, and him You created from clay. Shall I prostrate to one whom You created from clay?"
  • 4. (Araf, 7:11-12, Bani Israel, 17:61) ARROGANCE & DISOBEDIENCE: (1.FIRST TWO REASONS TO BE EXPELLED FROM PARADISE): Hence Iblis who was one of the jinns; he became arrogant, proud and disobeyed the Command of his Lord by refusing to prostrate to Adam A.S. (Al-Araf, 7:13, Kahf, 18:50) (Allah) said: "(O Iblis) get down from this (Paradise), it is not for you to be arrogant here. Get out, for you are of those humiliated and disgraced. You are Rajim (an outcast or a cursed one). And verily, the curse shall be upon you till the Day of Recompense (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)."(Sad, 38:77-78) IBLIS’S REACTION (AFTER HIS DISOBEDIENCE TO ALLAH): (IBLIS’ CHALLENGE TO ALLAH TALA): Then (Iblis) said: "See? This one whom You have honoured above me, if You give me respite till the Day of Resurrection, I will surely seize and mislead his offspring all but a few!" (Bani Israel, 17: 62) (Iblis) said: "Allow me respite till the Day they are raised up (i.e. The Day of Resurrection)." Allah said: "You are of those allowed respite." (Al-‘Araf, 7: 11-15) ‘I (SATAN) WILL SIT AND WAIT ON STRAIGHT PATH!’ Iblîs said: "O my Lord! By Your Might! Because you misled me, I shall indeed adorn the path of error for them (mankind) on the earth, and I shall mislead them all. Except Your chosen, (guided) slaves among them. Because You have sent me astray, surely I will sit in wait against them (human beings) on Your Straight Path, Then I will come to them from before them and behind them, from their right and from their left, and You will not find most of them as thankful ones (i.e. they will not be dutiful to You)." (Al-Hijr 15:36-40, Al-A’raf 7:16-17) Note: Siraat-ul-Mustaqeem (Allah’s Straight Path) is the Battle field for Iblis. He will attack from all sides on all those who tread on this path. ALLAH’S REPLY TO SHAITAN’S CHALLENGE: (Allâh) said: "The Truth is, and the Truth I say, That I will fill Hell with you [Iblîs/Satan] and those of them (mankind) that follow you, together." (Sad, 38:84-85) (Allâh) said: "Go, and whosoever of them follows you, surely! Hell will be the recompense of you (all) an ample recompense.
  • 5. And Istafziz [literally means: befool them gradually] those whom you can among them with your voice , make assaults on them with your cavalry (soldiers on horseback) and your infantry (foot soldiers), mutually share with them wealth and children and make promises to them. But Satan promises them nothing but deceit. Verily! My slaves (i.e the true believers), you have no authority over them. And All- Sufficient is your Lord as a Guardian. Certainly, you shall have no authority over My slaves, except those who follow you of the Ghâwîn (went astray/ mislead) . And surely, Hell is the promised place for them all. It (Hell) has seven gates, for each of those gates is a (special) class (of sinners) assigned.” (Bani Israel 17:63-64, Al-Hijr 15:42-44) Summary of Shaitan’s Challenge to Allah tala against Children of Adam A.S: Summary of Allah’s reply to Shaitan’s Challenge: He will mislead all Children of Adam except a few. He will adorn the path of error for them on the earth. He will sit and wait against them on Straight Path, and He will come to them from before them and behind them, from their right and from their left. He will make them ungrateful to Allah tala. Allah tala will fill the Hell with Iblis/ Satan and his followers. Go and befool them gradually with your voice, make assaults on them with your cavalry and infantry, share with them wealth and children, and make promises (false) to them. Shaitan has no authority (power) over Allah’s sincere slaves. Shaitan’s authority would be on those who follow him, got mislead by him, and went astray. His followers would enter hell from seven different gates. ISLAMIC GREETING (SALAM): After creating Adam A.S, Allah tala said to him: O Adam! Go to those angels and greet them, see what they would say. Whatever they say would be the greeting for you and your offspring.' So Adam went and greeted them; “Assalaamu Alaikum” (Peace be upon you all). They replied saying: ‘Alaika Assalaamu wa rahmatullaahi’ (Peace be upon you and the mercy and blessings of Allah). Allah
  • 6. said: '0 Adam! This is your greeting and that of your offspring. (Sahih Al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim) ALL CHILDREN OF ADAM WERE PRESENTED BEFORE HIM: Then Allah rubbed Adam's back and every soul to be created by Allah to the Day of Resurrection came forth. Allah tala has created a light between the eyes of each person. Then Allah tala presented all the souls before Adam A.S. So, Adam A.S asked Allah tala; “Who are these (people)?” Allah tala replied: “These are your descendents”. Adam A.S then saw one person among them whose light he liked the most. He again asked his Lord, “O My Lord! Who is this?” He (swt) answered: “He is one from the last nations of your progeny, his name is Dawood.” Adam A.S said; “My lord! What is his life span?” Allah tala said; “Sixty years”. He said: “Oh My Lord. Give him forty years from my life.” (At-Tirmidhi) Adam’s Progeny, witness of Allah: And when your Fosterer took out their descendants from the backs of the children of Adam* and made them bear witness against themselves (saying), "Am I not your Fosterer?" They said, "Why not, we bear witness." (We took this testimony from you) lest you should say on the day of resurrection, "We were unaware of this." (Al-A’raf, 7: 172) CREATION OF HAWWA (EVE) FOR ADAM’S A.S CONTENTMENT AND PEACE: A.S wife from his rib, in order that he may enjoy the pleasure of living with her. After driving away Iblis disgraced and expelled, Allah tala created Adam’s Allah tala says, "It is He Who created you from a single person, and made his mate of like nature, in order that he might dwell with her in love" (Al-A’raf 7:189, Sahih Bukhari) ADAM AND HAWWA SENT TO DWELL IN PARADISE: Then Allah tala commanded both of them (Adam A.S & his wife) to dwell in Paradise. (Al-Araf 7:19).: Adam A.S entered Paradise on Friday. (Sahih Muslim, Kitab ul Jumuah) ALLAH TALA’S ADVICE TO ADAM A.S AND HAWWA: And Allah tala addressed both and said: "O Adam! Dwell you and your wife in the Paradise and eat both of you freely with pleasure and delight of things therein as wherever you will, but come not near this tree or you both will be of the Zalimun (wrong-doers). "
  • 7. O Adam! Verily, this is an enemy to you and to your wife. So let him not get you both out of Paradise, so that you be distressed in misery. Verily, you have (a promise from Us) that you will never be hungry therein nor naked. And you (will) suffer not from thirst therein nor from the sun's heat." (Al-Baqarah 2:35, Taha 20:117-119). ALLAH’S DECISION TO PLACE KHALIFAH ON EARTH: Then Allah tala said to the angels: "Verily, I am going to place (mankind) a Khalifah (generations after generations) on earth." They said: "Will You place therein those who will make mischief therein and shed blood, - while we glorify You with praises and thanks and sanctify You." He (Allah) said: "I know that which you do not know." (Al-Baqarah 2:30) THEN ALLAH TALA TAUGHT ADAM A.S. ALL NAMES OF EVERYTHING: And He taught Adam all the names (of everything), then He showed them to the angels and said, "Tell Me the names of these if you are truthful (that you deserve to be eligible for khilaafah). They (angels) said: "Glory be to You, we have no knowledge except what you have taught us. Verily, it is You, the All-Knower, the All- Wise. Then Allah tala said: "O Adam! Inform them of their names," and when he had informed them of their names, He said: "Did I not tell you that I know the Ghaib (unseen) in the heavens and the earth, and I know what you reveal and what you have been concealing? (Al-Baqarah 2:31-33) TESTIFICATION OF ADAM A.S IN PARADISE: (IBLIS’S FIRST TRICK (CUNNING DECEPTION) AGAINST ADAM A.S): When Adam A.S and his wife was peacefully dwelling in Paradise, Iblis was after them and was determined to mislead them. He whispered to Adam A.S, saying : "O Adam! Shall I lead you to the Tree of Eternity and to a kingdom that will never waste away?” (Taha, 20:120) WEAPON OF IMMODESTY((Stripping them of their raiment) [7:27]): (THIRD REASON TO BE EXPELLED OUT FROM PARADISE) Then Shaitan (Satan) whispered suggestions to them both in order to uncover that which was hidden from them of their private parts (before); he said: "Your Lord did not forbid you this tree save you should become angels or become of the immortals." He then swore by Allah to them both (saying): "Verily, I am one of the sincere well wishers for you both." (Al-A’raf 7:20,21)
  • 8. Hence Adam A.S forgot the covenant that Allah tala made with him and He did not find on his part firm will-power. (Taha 20:115) So shaitan misled them with deception. (Araf 7:22) Hawwa (A.S.) however being mesmerized by the false promises and embellishments of Shaitaan, encouraged Adam (A.S.) to eat (partake) from the forbidden tree. Therefore they both tasted of the tree which Allah tala had forbidden for them. (Sahih Bukhari kitab ul bada ul khalq,) ADAM (A.S) AND HAWWA (A.S) FAILED THE TEST (AND DISOBEYED ALLAH TALA): IMMODESTY-A RESULT OF DISOBEDIENCE: When they tasted of the tree, that which was hidden from them of their shame (private parts) became manifest to them and they began to stick together the leaves of Paradise over themselves (in order to cover their shame). And Allah tala Lord called out to them (saying): "Did I not forbid you that tree and tell you: Verily, Shaitan (Satan) is an open enemy unto you (both) (Beware of him!)?" (Araf 7:22) Allah tala created Adam A.S very tall (60 cubits or 90 feet). He had thick hair on his head. When Adam A.S tasted of that (forbidden) tree (committed error) his (and his wife’s) clothes were separated from his body, his shame (private parts) became manifest to him while before, he did not see it. So he started running in fright through Paradise, but a tree in Paradise took him by the head. Adam A.S struggled to free himself from it (tree). Allah tala said: “ O Adam! Do you run away from Me? He said, ‘O Lord ! I felt ashamed before You.” (Sahih Bukhari Kitabul Bada wal khalq, & Al-Badaaya wa Al-Nihaaya, Sanad Sahih). ADAM AND HAWWA EXPELLED OUT FROM PARADISE: Adam A.S and his wife (Hawwa) by Allah’s command were expelled out from Paradise on Friday. (Hadith - related by Muslim, Abu Dawud, an-Nasa'i, and at-Tirmidhi who calls it sahih). DESCEND TO EARTH: It was Friday when he was commanded to descend to earth and it was Friday that he descended to earth. (An-Nasai, Kitab ul Jumuah, Sanad Sahih). ENEMITY BETWEEN MAN AND SATAN CONFIRMED: (FOURTH REASON FOR BEING EXPELLED OUT FROM PARADISE): Allah tala said: "Get you down, all, with enmity between yourselves. On earth will be a dwelling place for you and an enjoyment for a time." (2:36)
  • 9. ADAM’S A.S. WORDS TO SEEK FORGIVENESS FROM ALLAH: Adam A.S along with her wife descended to earth and Allah tala taught him following words: Translation: : "Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You forgive us not, and bestow not upon us Your Mercy, we shall certainly be of the losers." (Araf 7:23) REPENTANCE ACCEPTED BY ALLAH: Adam A.S (and his wife) asked for Allah’s forgiveness through these (above mentioned) words that Allah tala himself taught them. Allah tala accepted their repentance on Friday. He (s.w.t) chose Adam A.S as revered Prophet, kept his foothold firm on guidance and helped him reached the intended destination. (Al-Baqarah 2:37, Al-A’raf 7:23, Sunan Kubra, An-Nasai—Sanad Sahih) ADAM A.S WAS ORDERED BY ALLAH TO DWELL ON EARTH: Even after accepting their repentance, Allah tala commanded Adam A.S to dwell on earth and said; “On earth will be a dwelling place for you and an enjoyment, - for a time. Therein you shall live, and therein you shall die, and from it you shall be brought out (i.e.resurrected)." (Araf 7: 24, 25) BEGINNING OF LIFE ON EARTH: ALLAH’S ADVICES TO ADAM AND HAWWA: 1. Follow Allah’s Guidance: Then Allah advised them (both) that in this life on the earth (or worldly life), whenever there comes to you Guidance from Me, and whoever follows My Guidance, there shall be no fear on them, nor shall they grieve. But those who disbelieve and belie Our Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) such are the dwellers of the Fire, they shall abide therein forever. (Al-Baqarah 2:38,39) 2. Adopt Best Raiment (CLOTHES): When Adam A.S. started his life on earth, Allah tala bestowed raiment (clothes) upon him to cover himself (screen your private parts, etc.) and as an adornment, and further emphasized that the raiment of righteousness (TAQWA), is even better. (Al-A’raf 7:26) ALLAH TALA BLESSED ADAM A.S WITH MANY CHILDREN: Allah tala blessed Adam A.S with many children. (An-Nisa 4:1)
  • 10. Allah tala has honoured the Children of Adam, and He (swt) has carried them on land and sea, and has provided them with At-Taiyibât (lawful good things), and has preferred them above many of those whom Allah tala has created with a marked preference (Bani Israel, 17:70) ALLAH TALA’S INSTRUCTIONS TO CHILDREN OF ADAM: RAIMENT (CLOTHES) OF PIETY (TAQWA) IS THE BEST: Allah tala addressed Children of Adam and said; “O Children of Adam! We have bestowed raiment upon you to cover yourselves (screen your private parts, etc.) and as an adornment, and the raiment of righteousness, that is better. .. (Al-A’raf 7:26) WORSHIP (OBEY) ONLY ALLAH AND DO NOT WORSHIP (OBEY) SHAITAN: What is Straight path? Then Allah tala took covenant with children of Adam A.S that ‘you should not worship Shaitân (i.e. you should not obey shaitan), Verily, he is a plain enemy to you. And that you should worship Me Alone (i.e you should obey only Allah) That is a Straight Path’. (Ya Sin, 36: 60-61) WARNING AGAINST SHAITAN! Allah tala said; “O Children of Adam! Let not Shaitan (Satan) deceive you, as he got your parents [Adam and Hawwa (Eve)] out of Paradise, stripping them of their raiments, to show them their private parts. Verily, he and Qabiluhu (his soldiers from the jinns or his tribe) see you from where you cannot see them. Verily, We made the Shayatin (devils) Auliya' (friends, protectors and helpers) for those who believe not. (Al-A’raf 7:27) ADORN YOURSELF BEFORE ACTS OF WORSHIP: (EAT AND DRINK BUT DO NOT WASTE!) O Children of Adam! Take your adornment (by wearing your clean clothes), while praying and going round (the Tawâf of ) the Ka'bah, and eat and drink but waste not by extravagance, certainly He (Allâh) likes not Al-Musrifûn (those who waste by extravagance). ACCEPT THE CALL OF MESSENGERS WHEN THEY COME TO YOU: O Children of Adam! If there come to you Messengers from amongst you, reciting to you, My Verses, then whosoever becomes pious and righteous, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve. But those who reject Our Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) and treat them with arrogance, they are the dwellers of the (Hell) Fire, they will abide therein forever. (Al-A’raf 7:35, 36)
  • 11. Allah’s Promise to Children of Adam A.S O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great as it. (Hadith - Qudsi 34, It was related by at-Tirmidhi (also by Ahmad ibn Hanbal). Its chain of authorities is sound.) TRUE INCIDENT OF TWO SONS OF ADAM A.S: As mentioned earlier, Adam A.S was blessed with many children. Among them were his two sons; when each one gave a sacrifice (to Allâh), it was accepted from the one but not from the other. The latter said to the former: "I will surely kill you." The former said: "Verily, Allâh accepts only from those who are Al- Muttaqûn (those who fear Allah)" (Al-Maidah 5:27) "If you do stretch your hand against me to kill me, I shall never stretch my hand against you to kill you, for I fear Allâh; the Lord of the 'Alamîn (mankind, jinns, and all that exists)." "Verily, I intend to let you draw my sin on yourself as well as yours, then you will be one of the dwellers of the Fire, and that is the recompense of the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrongdoers)." So the Nafs (self) of the other (latter one) encouraged him and made fair - seeming to him the murder of his brother; he murdered him and became one of the losers. Then Al-lâh sent a crow who scratched the ground to show him to hide the dead body of his brother. He (the murderer) said: "Woe to me! Am I not even able to be as this crow and to hide the dead body of my brother?" Then he became one of those who regretted. (Al-Maidah 5:28-31) FIRST MURDER ON EARTH: Qabil (Cain) was the first person who initiated murder (killing) on earth. (Sahih Bukhari, Kitab ul Khalq)
  • 12. LAST FORTY YEARS OF LIFE OF ADAM A.S AND HIS DEATH: When Adam A.S. life span reached its completion, angels of death approached him. Adam was surprised and said “but don’t I still have 40 years to live”. The angel of death reminded him of his gift of 40 years to his beloved descendant Prophet David, but Adam denied it. Many, many years later, the last Prophet Muhammad said: “Adam denied so the children of Adam deny, Adam forgot and his children forget; Adam made mistakes and his children make mistakes.” (At-Tirmidhi, sanad Sahih) WEAKNESSES IN ADAM A.S. AND HIS CHILDREN: -REFUSAL/DENIAL, FORGETFULLNESS & MISTAKES Death of Adam A.S: Adam A.S left this world (died) on Friday. (Ibn Khuzaima, Sanad Sahih) VIRTUES OF ADAM A.S: 1. Allah Tala chose Adam A.S above Aalamin (worlds). (Ale-Imran, 3:33) 2. Allah tala made him father of Mankind. 3. Allah tala created Adam A.S with His own Hands. 4. Made all angels prostrate before him (Adam A.S). 5. Taught him all the names of everything. (Sahih Bukhari, Kitab ul Tafseer). How are Adam’s A.S and Iesa A.S similar? Verily, the likeness of 'Iesa (Jesus) before Allah is the likeness of Adam. He created him from dust, then (He) said to him: "Be!" - and he was. (Al-'Imran 3:59 )
