FPGAs aren’t new devices ! • Programmable logic devices (PLD) = Programmable HW. • Commercially available in early ’80s by Xilinx and Altera. • As a consequence of Moore’s Law, they started as “glue” logic devices and evolved to now “system-on-chip” embedded system platforms for high-level applications. • Well-known for technical capabilities to crunch numbers. • Used to be expensive devices. But… • HW design is one level of complexity higher than conventional design (SW) with off-the-shelf DSP and MCUs. • Typical motor control designer doesn’t know about FPGA. • Motor control talent is rare to find. • At the end, people want better, cheaper and products that goes on the market faster !
