  • 9. PROGRAM IPA/IPS - B. INGGRIS - PAKET C- TRYOUT MKKS DKI JAKARTA 2013-2014 9 This text is for questions 30 to 33. In 1985, a comic strip called "Calvin and Hobbes" appeared in a small number of newspapers. Its run ended in 1995, having become one of the most popular and beloved strips of all time, and, many believe, the greatest. Creator Bill Watterson -- who never appears in this movie -- viewed comics as an art form and held himself to that high bar, creating great jokes and visuals day after day. He inspired numerous others, and unlike many of his contemporaries, he refused to merchandise his characters, turning them into toys or lunch boxes, thereby keeping a kind of purity and control to his work. The movie also discusses the death of the art form of cartooning as we know it, and how "Calvin and Hobbes" might have been the last great comic strip. DEAR MR. WATTERSON has two frustrating aspects. Most obviously, the reclusive Bill Watterson does not appear anywhere, not even in photographs, though some of his quotes are printed onscreen. Secondly, director Joel Allen Schroeder -- whose first feature-length film this is -- fails to film the "Calvin and Hobbes" comics in a simple, straightforward way so that the audience can actually read them; instead, he keeps them moving around, adding digital effects for short attention spans. And though the rest of the movie is presented in the typical talking-head format, the interviews are all enthusiastic and feature the faces behind many popular comic strips, including Berkeley Breathed ("Bloom County" and "Opus") and Stephan Pastis ("Pearls Before Swine"). The movie generates great excitement and awe over Watterson's work, especially when Schroeder is shown, white-gloved, poring over original strips. The movie definitely makes you want to read, or re-read, these classics. 30. What does the text mainly tell? A. A comic strip B. A movie review C. 1985’s comic strips D. A review of comic strips E. The biography of Mr. Watterson 31. ‖ Most obviously, the reclusive Bill Watterson does not appear anywhere, not even in photographs, though some of his quotes are printed onscreen.‖ (Paragraph 2) What does the underlined word mean? A. kind B. selfish C. isolated D. friendly E. impatient 32. What is the constructive opinion as stated in the writer’s critics? A. The digital effects B. The sociable character C. The straight forwards talks D. The generating excitement E. The typical talking-head format 33. ― …he keeps them moving around, adding digital effects for short attention spans.‖ What does the underlined word refer to? A. Calvin B. Hobbes C. Berkeley D. Schroeder E. Watterson This text is for questions 34 to 36. There are professional organizations in every field. Those who are active in these organizations get some benefits. They gain job, mentoring, professional development, networking, and scholarship. The first benefit fits to people who are jobless. Many professional organizations help their members find jobs, or at the least, offer up job listings that other members may be offering.
  • 10. PROGRAM IPA/IPS - B. INGGRIS - PAKET C- TRYOUT MKKS DKI JAKARTA 2013-2014 10 Professional development is also nurtured in professional organizations. Many organizations offer professional development via courses, workshops, publications, and information on their website shared only with members. They also keep members up to date on industry trends and how to deal with them. Some organizations (take the National Association of Black Journalists for example) offer news and print coverage of their annual conferences, run by students—which is an excellent opportunity to gain experience. Apart from job offering, and professional development, the organizations members have opportunity to have networking. Most organizations have an annual conference. This is an opportunity for you to mix and mingle with others in your field in both professional and leisure settings. There is also often a job fair where you can make contact and stay up to date with the people who hire – even if they’re not hiring right now. In fact, some people find recruiters follow their career and stay updated when you stop by their booth at the job fair. They may be keeping an eye on you until they are ready to finally offer you a job. As there are several advantages that people may get from becoming members of professional organizations, it is essential for young people to join of available professional organizations. 34. What does the text mainly concern? A. The obligation of joining professional organizations B. The establishment of professional organizations C. The importance of professional organizations D. The benefits of professional development E. The advantages of networking 35. ―They also keep members up to date on industry trends and how to deal with them.‖ (Paragraph 3) What does the underlined word refer to? A. Workers B. Teachers C. Organizers D. Publishers E. Developers 36. ―Professional development is also nurtured in professional organizations.‖ (Paragraph 3) What is the closest meaning of the underlined word? A. Shown B.
