‘Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (e.g. stage performance in metal video, dance routine for boy/girl band.)’ In Adele’s music video the main characteristics of the singer/songwriter genre are shown. The main focus is on the artist, although Adele herself isn’t directly playing an instrument but the main instrument being played is a piano. The themes are also stereotypical for this genre; Adele is singing about heartbreak and her make up and costume in the video suggest that she has been crying. At 01:37 there is a long shot showing the building which she is in, the only room visible is the room with Adele in. Telling the audience that she is the main focus for the video.
‘There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).’‘I’d go hungry, I’d go black and blue, I’d go crawling down theavenue’ There is a relationship shown between the artist and thelyrics here, as she sings these lyrics she holds her own arms in aprotective way. This is suggesting that she is comforting herself asshe is tired from her relationship. The use of camera angles her show the singers make up, there is abirds eye shot used at 02:13, this is making it clearer to theaudience that she has been crying.
‘There is a relationship between music and visuals (illustrative, amplifying, and contradicting).’There is a relationship between the visuals and the music when it isthe instrumental, the artist then walks around and the piano andviolin become more amplified. When the artists sang the loudernotes she looks around, this is the opposite to the quiet notes whereAdele also sings quieter and acts almost shy.
‘The demands of the record label will include the willinclude the need for lots of close ups of the artist andthe artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).’ In this music video the artist is the only person shown and therefore she has complete focus on her. There are several different camera angles, but they also have the main focus on Adele. At 0:36 seconds when the vocals begin, Adele is shown in the centre of a close up shot.
‘There is frequently references to the notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.’ This video challenges this statement as there is no voyeuristic treatment of the female body; however the artist is being portrayed in a stereotypical way. Woman are associated with emotion and here Adele is singing about romance, which is also a theme associated with the singer/songwriter genre.
