    • RESEARCH: Conclusions
    • Deconstructions
      • I researched into four fantasy films one from the 80’s, 90’s 00’s and 10’s and deconstructed the first two minutes using the 4 technical codes. I had discovered that In all four films In the first two minutes the genre fantasy had been highlighted.
      • These are the following films that I researched: 2010 TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE 2004 ELLA ENCHANTED 1996 MATILDA 1981 TIME BANDITS
    • Fantasy Genre
      • In my research I had come to the conclusion that over time Fantasy films have evolved. High-tech filmmaking techniques such as special effects have meant that the genre can evolve making the films more life like and realistic.
      • In my research I also found out about what sort of elements make up a fantasy film. I will now check and see if these elements are present in the first two minutes.
      • -Magic -Supernatural -Fantasy or parallel worlds as a setting -Make-believe creatures -Villain or hero
    • Definition of elements
      • Magic
      • Magic is the art of manipulating aspects of reality either by supernatural means or through knowledge of occult laws unknown to science. Supernatural
      • Not subject to the laws of nature, or more symbolically, that which is said to exist above and beyond nature. Fantasy or parallel worlds as a setting World-within-a-world, hypothetical self-contained separate reality parallel with one's own. Make-believe creatures
      • Made up creatures such as Unicorns, Elves, dragons, ogres, goblins, Vampires, Werewolves, Zombies etc.. Villain or hero
      • An Evil character who tends to have a negative impact on other characters or a character who, from a position of weakness, display courage.
    • What was established in the first two minutes? No No No No No No No
    • Conclusion of elements included
      • The elements that make up a Fantasy film were noted in the openings of all four films (some more then others)
      • Time Bandits and Matilda which were from the 80’s and 90’s and did not contain as many elements of fantasy as the more recent films Ella Enchanted and Eclipse. This may be because of the development of special effects and how the genre has developed over time.
      • Matilda and Time Bandits only contained one of the five elements where as Eclipse contained two and Ella Enchanted contained three. Although the elements that I had concluded were only a guideline to what a Fantasy film contained it has made me aware of what makes up a fantasy film.
    • Similarities A close up shot of all the main characters is used in all four films. Ella Enchanted Eclipse Matilda Time Bandits
    • Similarities These screen shots show the main characters point of view shots in Eclipse (right) and Time Bandits (below.)
    • Similarities in all four films – Technical Codes
      • Each film contained non-diegetic sound which was used to enhance the mood and atmosphere and also created verisimilitude.
      • Sound -All started with non-diegetic music -Two films had a voice over (narrator) Matilda and Ella Enchanted)
      • -all included dialogue from the characters
      • Camera work -all used a close up shot length -two films had a point of view shot (shot type) Eclipse and Time Bandits
    • Similarities in all four films – Technical Codes
      • Mise -En-Scene -Two settings (Time Bandits & Matilda) were mainly located in a house
      • Editing -match on action was used in all four films -a mix of non-continuity editing and continuity editing was used in all four films
      • Overall all four fantasy films are commonly linked in all four technical codes and elements included.
