  • CHANGE is Confusing           -CHANGE is Scary           -CHANGE is Unpredictable           -CHANGE is Rapid           -CHANGE is Radical           -CHANGE is Controllable           -CHANGE is Normal           -CHANGE IS OPPORTUNITY! Companies today are working in an environment of incredible change. The customer base is shifting, technology is constantly changing, margins are shrinking and competition is stiffer. Whether change is abrupt or gradual, the rules that once worked will in many cases become partly or completely outdated. Ignoring that reality is so devastating. The key to success is change readiness and openness to other opinions and views . It ain’t easy to come out of your comfort zones- they knew so much about what they knew & they were last to see it differently Everyone suffers from educated incapacity because everyone has a stake in the status quo of his/her discipline. We have a stake in what we know. We are paid for what we know.
  • Leadership in business: a People Planet & Profit challenge Business is part of the society in which its operates There is an emerging insight that business has a responsibility beyond itself Business, society & nature are finding new ways to co-exist It is time to stop living in the past and focus on thinking of our future Your business plus people, planet & profit offer new opportunities to grow To grow by putting our future at the heart of your business. Grow better by being and doing good as a people, planet, profit conscious business Innovation will be key to find new ways to overcome PPP dilemmas, to make inspired choices, to find brilliant new balances to be successful in business Together we can be successful in a world that offers prosperity to the present AND the next generations A modern corporation will be consequently looking for a balance between optimizing/maximizing value creation and the constraints of socio-environmental & ethical ambitions & responsibilities
  • The triple bottom line is sometimes referred to as “TBL” or “3BL.” Triple bottom line can also be simply summarized as People, Planet and Profit: CSR Requires the individual to consider his/her acts in terms of a whole social system, and holds him/her responsible for the effects of acts anywhere in that system in view of stakeholder expectations and/or that society has of organizations at a given point in time. People - Social bottom line People are also known as human capital . The people aspect means treating employees, the community, and the region in which a corporation conducts its business correctly. In this part of the TBL, business not only ensures a fair day’s work for a fair day’s pay but also reinvests some of its profits into the surrounding community through education, sponsorships, or donations, or helping in projects that promote the common good. Planet - Environmental bottom line Under the planet principle, or natural capital , a business will endeavor to minimize its ecological impact in all areas—from obtaining raw materials, through production processes, to shipping and management. It is a “cradle to grave” attitude, and in some cases “cradle to cradle,” i.e. taking responsibility for goods after they’ve been sold by, for example, offering a recycling or return program. Profit - Economic bottom line TBL is about making a principled profit, rather than earning a profit at any cost. In other words, the profit made should be in accord with the other two principles of People and Planet. The TBL concept is important because it is not just about commerce; it is an ongoing process that helps a company to run a more sustainable and greener business and demonstrates to the community at large that the company is working not just for profit but also for the members of the community. On balance, without people and planet, there would be no profit to be made. Sustainability is related to the simultaneous optimization of all three. 3P is about the awareness that success has to do with the interrelationship between social, environmental, economic aspects & impacts of an organization’s activities To measure of success determined by economic status, impact on society, and impact on the environment Corporate Social Responsibility is the way companies manage their businesses to produce an overall positive impact on society through integrated economic, environmental and social actions. Social Responsibility: How How profits are made? E ffects on people & environment! As a part of society, it is in business’ interest to contribute to addressing common problems Strategically speaking, business can only flourish when the communities and ecosystems in which they operate are healthy. CSR Globally companies are expected to do more than merely provide jobs and contribute to the economy through taxes and employment “ If you take, you’ll have to return” Minimizing negative environmental and social impacts and maximizing positive environmental and social impac ts For your future leaders CSR will be the way to be in business & to do business In a few decades, when they will be in charge, CSR is nothing special anymore Modern / future business leadership requires CSR being internalised in the way organisations are operating Business should put Corporate Responsibility at the centre of its activities The new conventional wisdom is going to be that it doesn't just matter how a company's stock price moves, but it matters, too, how it conducts its business! Good Vibes: Socially responsible investing is gaining fans...and clout Robin Goldwyn Blumenthal Barron's , July 7, 2003 CSR is not defensive communication CSR is about the integrity with which a company governs itself, fulfils its mission, lives by its values, engages with its stakeholders, measures its impacts on the ecosystems, on society and publicly reports on its activities People Attract and develop accountable & responsible leaders, involve and develop your employees, respect & engage stakeholders Planet Reduce, reuse and recycle, make ethical decisions and give back Profit Ensure sufficient & sustainable ROI in order to be able to “finance” present & future developments to meet & exceed customer (& stakeholder) expectations Process Solve problems, create robust systems and continuously improve sustainability outcomes
  • A huge (business &) societal challenge!
  • Basic services & resources that the natural world now provides cheaply will become more and more expensive and require a different business approach & attitude emerging markets, global teaming, diverse cultures, working outside the traditional office & increased societal expectations for more responsible and sustainable business practices.
  • “ … . it is so complex because CSR includes everything from very local community based problems to planetary issues of climate change and environmental degradation ….” “… .. In all cases you will be dealing with local & international governance issues but above all with a very divers group of people, your stakeholders and their facts, opinions, emotions, ambitions …..”
  • Interrelated issues Global trends & issues that require action - demographical developments - malnutrition, demand for food & water - increasing scarcity natural resources - pollution - climate changes - increasing (global) mobility - urbanisation - need for medical care & education - poverty, fair share & fair trade - child labour What issues does CSR address? Pollution of the environment Supply – chain management Human rights Ethical investment Good governance Political & social Employee rights Training Stakeholder engagement and dialogue Clean technology Overall reputation
  • “ Managing” stakeholder relations in the sense of “controlling” is mission impossible
  • Now more than ever, external stakeholders have access to, and participate in, a multitude of online & social media options to learn and communicate about the SR records of particular organizations This upward trend that is likely to continue
  • In a modern complex global & diverse society, expectations of company behavior is constantly changing and will ever be more demanding with time Society’s expectations of business increase every year and no organization can hope to be successful without taking account of those expectations continuous process of awareness of : - changing views & priorities dependencies & relations impossibilities & opportunities - responsibilities & accountabilities balancing act int. & ext. interests Companies today are working in an environment of incredible change. The customer base is shifting, technology is constantly changing, margins are shrinking and competition is stiffer. Whether change is abrupt or gradual, the rules that once worked will in many cases become partly or completely outdated. Ignoring that reality is so devastating. The key to success is change readiness and openness to other opinions and views CSR, a journey that doesn’t stop CSR in business isn’t a passive thing, you have to take action to achieve it! Then it's like being fit & keeping fit – having achieved fitness, you can't stop! Corporate Responsibility and Citizenship is a journey – It requires companies to think about their operations is a new way – It takes substantial effort – It cannot be achieved overnight – It starts with executive level recognition of the business rationale and understanding how citizenship elements relate in the company’s context – And it proceeds by defining appropriate policies and developing an iterative response through systems, action plans and targets – Ultimately, responsible citizenship is a value system that takes time to permeate all sections and all aspects of the organisation. – It is a journey towards prosperous and sustainable business.
  • In a world - used to focus primarily on the Profit Bottom Line where stakeholders now have social media to connect and empower themselves The leader intends to be the author of some aspect of the future - to interfere with the unfolding of history, of the story that would have been if that leader had not intervened. ” Great leaders are almost always great simplifiers, who can cut through argument, debate, and doubt to offer a solution everybody can understand.” General Colin Powell
  • In a world - used to focus primarily on the Profit Bottom Line where stakeholders now have social media to connect and empower themselves
  • It begins by learning (by doing) & gaining & developing (new) insights for future leadership roles The way to do business means: CSR stakeholder awareness CSR thinking CSR behaving CSR decision making
  • Leadership Development: Understanding the nature of interrelating, its forms and effectiveness We learn by conversing with ourselves, with others and with the world around us Leadership is about taking part, not taking charge Interactions with people influence who you are
  • Action Learning
  • Make CSR part of the first assignment
  • Leadership is an expression of conviction, courage, character and compassion. The rest of it—knowledge, skill, experience and training—must come along in due course Personal humility, not ego Defend beliefs with courage Ambitious for organisation, not themselves Nurture core values – ‘integrity’
  • Social responsibility is a guiding principle for every decision made and in every area of a business To fit even the most general definition of social responsibility, we have to change our business styles as well as our lifestyles … The world has reached a CSR tipping point now We’re beyond the debates over whether CSR is something that needs to be done or not — it’s now mostly about HOW DO WE DO IT! It’s about how to create sustainable value ! …… . Steve Fludder vice president, ecomagination, GE
