H O W D I D Y O U AT T R A C T / A D D R E S S Y O U R AUDIENCE? 4 . W H AT H AV E Y O U L E A R N E D F R O M Y O U R AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?This is the presentation we’ve done toplan question 3 and how we Alexa Ranussianswered it. Dafne Caldatto Rafaella Batista
  2. 2. 1. What have you learned from your audience feedback?Conventions: we used well conventions, and a good The mainthing was that we didn’t challenge in order to not thing that ourconfuse our audience. targetMusic: we linked well the music with the topic for audienceexample we used ‘Born this way’ from Lady Gaga said was thewhich has a gay meaning. this topic it’sInterview Styling: We diced that the presenter was verygoing to be part of the interviews so we can show debatablepeople that the presenter is interacting with the and that a lotaudience. of people don’t knowSounds: about the LGBTShots: community and that’sMise en scene: why they are ignorant
  3. 3. What did you learnt from your target audience feedback? What did their comments show/teach you? WWW EBI - The presenter was interactive - We interviewed more people throughout the whole documentary - Up beat music engage the - For the 1st draft the music had cuts audience well and didn’t have continuity - The use a timeline to show - We struggled with time statistics management - Past footage & real footage to back up point - Use of different shots
  4. 4. What changes need to me made toimprove? To improve we could have ….- Add more statistics- Speak to people from charities such as Stonewall- Have a diversity of age group for interviews----
  5. 5. 2. Who would be your audience for your mediaproduct? a) introduce your topic and who your target audience is. You could have a sample of a small group of people to describe who they are b) Optional- How do you know they are your target audience? (can show research into how you formed your target audience ex focus groups? -a- What is film rated/ guidance/ warnings etc, into relation with OFCOM? related to target audience. c)What channel is it shown on and why? relate to target audience d) What time is it shown at and why? relate to target audience
  6. 6. Who is your target audience? WHO IS YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE? We did a lot of research Age 15 – 30 years old on target audience, such Gender All genders, as our topic is LGBT it as includes every gender identity. • questionnaires Ethnicity All – not specified • Interviews Hobbies All – not specified • case studies Location All locations are targeted but central London is where we get audience • Videos feedback. Social Class All – not specifiedWe found out that our main target audience would be young peoplebecause they showed more interest on our topic. Elderly peoplewere not so engaged with the topic, because they have a differentway of thinking, therefore our aim is to promote LGBT Communitythrough all ages, but mainly attract more young people
  7. 7. a) Introduce your topic and who your target audience is. Youcould have a sample of a small group of people to describe who they are Our chosen topic is Homosexuality and how it has changed over time. It is a topic that creates debate, and explores different opinions from a wide range of audience. Our chosen target audience is from 15 to 30 years old. This chart contains information about the age and the percentage of how much interest they show towards a homosexual documentary
  8. 8. b) Optional- How do you know they are your target audience? (can show research into how you formed your target audience ex focus groups?  Questionnaire about Target Audience This is was the first questionnaire  Documentary: Homosexuality Name:________________ Age:______ that we did for our target audience. Ethnicity:_________________ Interests:_____________ We went out and asked people, and 1. Are you interested in watching a documentary about some of the people especially homosexuality? elderly people would show a Yes No different emotion once they heard 2. Do you prefer to watch an episode about: homosexuality. This gave us ideas Nature VS Nurture that elderly people would not be Religion interested to watch a documentary How media portray homosexuality How it has changed over time about homosexuality. 40-60 3. Would you like to know more about homosexuality? 30-40 9% Yes 10% No 18-30 15-18 23% 58% Amount of people of certain age range
  9. 9. -a- What is film rated/ guidance/ warnings etc, into relation with OFCOM? related to target audience. How are you meeting OFCOMOFCOM’s main legal duties are to ensure that a wide rangeof high quality programmes are provided, appealing to arange of tastes and interests. We are meeting their rules byensuring that people are protected from offensive materialand keeping their privacy protected. We had to do a lot of research towards the OFCOM regulations, in order to understand that we can’t put anything that would offend any of the viewers. In order to do that we also research for inspirational documentaries to understand the timetable.
  10. 10. -a- What is film rated/ guidance/ warnings etc, into relation with OFCOM? related to target audience. I think our documentary is best to go around 8-9pm in order to follow the rules of times of documentaries shown on TV My Transsexual Summer - This documentary went on Channel 4 Tue 29 Nov, 10PM. By the time we can see clearly that it targets young adults because it deals with a subject that can create prejudice. Next Episode: Mon 12 Dec, 11.45PM on Channel 4 - This helped us to understand that even though homosexuality is banned from the world it is still not totally acceptable to be showing onuse Therefore we had to show What we can use We cant TV. at a later time • Strong language • Discrimination • Sexual scenes • No content that creates racism • Violence scenes to a certain extend
  11. 11. c)What channel is it shown on and why? relate to target audience Our chosen Channel was , channel 4. We had looked at a lot of documentaries from this channel, and most of them are debatable and they involve contemporary issues It also has a TV drama called Hollyoaks where they show Lesbian and Gay relationship openly, it also shows the challenge of putting these types of scenes on TV. Channel 4 is also considered to be a very good channel, ‘Inspirational and award-winning documentaries from over 25 years of groundbreaking television’
  12. 12. d) What time is it shown at and why? relate to target audience I think our documentary is best to go around 8- 9pm in order to follow the rules of times of documentaries shown on TV It has to follow rules such as, children TV time and the usual time for documentaries. Our documentary has strong issue and theme which does not allow us to choose a time, but to follow the rule.
  13. 13. d) What time is it shown at and why? relate to target audience These are the obligations of OFCOM, and in order to fit the best category of OFCOM we have to be able to follow these and make sure that we inform our audience
  14. 14. 1.How did you attract/address your audience? a)Briefly prove how your target audience will be attracted to your documentary b) Watching the documentary (brief shots and should have voice over explaining what youre doing and who is watching. Specially how they are you target audience) c) Interviews with individuals from the audience (asking them questions) Remember to ask them specific and detailed questions. d) Show and film a section on a list of things you did to attract/address your audience (forms and conventions)
  15. 15.  Our target audience would be attracted to our documentary by:- Topic: LGBT People/Community is a modern topic, as our target audience has a wide range of age (15-30yrs old) we thought that they would be attracted because it creates debate and different opinions are involved. It will be proven with the video we recorded, of audience feedback, askingthem if they’d like to watch a documentary about the LGBT Community andwhy they would be interested.
  16. 16.  Our target audience will watch our final draft and we will record them, and then show some brief shots with a voice over:- “Our target audience varies from 15 to 30 years old, we decided to targetthem because younger people are more likely to watch it according to ourresearches, and to make sure that we have attracted our target audiencecorrectly we decided to take feedback from them afterwards”.
  17. 17. We could have some 3 shots of 3 different people from our audience afterthey have watched our documentary, with a subtitle on it saying: Name of person Age InterestsWe would ask the individuals: Did you enjoy watching our documentary? How did our documentary informed you about the LGBT Community? Do you think that the media has a great impact towards our perceptions?
  18. 18.  Briefly show shots of where we have used that form/convention, with voiceover explaining why and how did it make useful to attract/address our target audience.- We could talk about only 2 forms and 2 conventions so that it is briefly and
  19. 19. FORMS Why?Music We have considered using very up beat music, which is different from the conventional to attract our younger audience.Transitions We have developed the form of transitions as we wanted to meet our target audience and also we wanted to make it entertaining by having different types of transitions.Editing In order to make it appropriate to our audience, and our target audience. We have tried to do the editing as ‘invisible’ as possible, so that the audience wouldn’t get confused and would be still interested in watching the whole documentary.Framing We have tried to use framing correctly because we didn’t want to make the audience confused, also it can relate appropriately to the overall documentary. It was clear to the audience, also we didn’t need to challenge or develop this to meet our target audience.
  20. 20. CONVENTIONS Why?Interviews We have used a lot of interview in order to gain different opinion that would apply to any of our target audience, as we’ve had a wide range of age between them, they would have different opinions about our topic.Voiceover We used voiceovers in order to sync the images that we show. We wanted to show a lot of images and different shots but we had to explain everything we showed in order to the audience understands more and get informed about our main debate.Presenter We have tried to use our presenter as our target audience would be, very young looking, with casual costume and also, making her very engaged to the audience by her body language and facial expressions.
  21. 21. 1. What have you learned from your audience feedback?
  22. 22. a) List your audience feedback comments (good and bad): Organise them into categories and make bulletpoint lists.
