An updated version of the Dam Greenland project presentation. This project examines the idea of damming parts of Greenland to create a giant reservoir, preventing the melted glaciers’ water from entering the ocean, and thus reducing the effect of rising sea levels and changes in salinity levels.

  • これが現在のグリーンランドです。地図でわかるようにほとんどが氷でおおわれています。百年後には、ほとんどの氷がとけてしまうと思われます。氷がとけた水が海へ流れ出して、海面の水位が上げってしまい、色々な問題がおこります。そこで、私は、水が外へ流れ出すのをふせぐために、ダムを作ることを考えました。This is what Greenland looks like today. As you can see, it is covered in ice. In 100 years, most of the ice would have melted. The water from the melted ice would have flowed into the ocean, causing dramatic sea level rise. The sea level rise in turn leads to many other problems, such as climate change. To prevent this, my solution is to block all the outlets where the melted water flows out by building dams there.

To build a dam, you need the right geography. The land should ideally be shaped like a bathtub with narrow outlets that you can plug with the dams.
  • グリーンランドを見ると、ダムを作るのに、ちょうど良い地形です。グリーンランドは3000メートルもある高い山で囲まれています。そして、四つ(指す)の水の出口があります。四つの出口を大きくした写真があります。Luckily, Greenland is shaped exactly like a giant bathtub. Greenland is surrounded by mountains up to 3000 meters high, and there are four narrow outlets that can be plugged to form natural dams.
  • これが、1番目の出口です。写真でわかるように、赤丸の部分から、氷が解けた水が流れ出していきます。二番目の写真は、赤丸の部分を大きくした物です。そこで、その出口にダムをつくって、水が流れ出すのを止めるのです。ダムの長さは17キロメートルになります。As seen in the first picture, the entire glacier empties out into the sea through one outlet, so by building a dam there, as shown in the second picture, the water can be saved. The length of the dam will be 17 km.
  • これが、2番目の出口です。ダムの長さは100キロメートルになります。This is the second outlet, Humboldt. If the dam is built, then the length of the dam will be 100 km long. 100 km may seem impossibly long, but there are dams in other countries that are quite long as well, such as the Hirakud dam in India. (26km)
  • これが、3番目の出口です。ダムの長さは6キロメートルになります。This is the third outlet, called Jakobshavn. This is the smallest of the four outlets, and the length of a dam built there will be 6 km long.
  • これが、4番目の出口です。ダムの長さは26キロメートルになります。This is the fourth outlet. It has many names, but is usually referred to as 79 N. Two dams will be built at this site; one will be 24 km long, and the other will be 28 km long, which totals to 54 km.
  • 普通、ダムは決められた場所に、コンクリートを流し込んで、作ります。Normally, dams are build by pouring concrete at the site of the dam.

Pieces need to be manufactured elsewhere, then shipped to Greenland, like with Holland’s Storm Surge barrier.the method for Tibet/Qinghai railway may be suitable. Using the same method of calculation, the total cost of the four dams needed to be built in Greenland is 1978 billion dollars, about 2 trillion.

Just the cost of damage from the arctic melting alone will cost $60 billion.
