Geography Blog - Lesson 2

  1. 1. Machu Picchu<br />Today we will start creating our own blogs on Machu Picchu<br />
  2. 2. Starter: Mind Map<br />In the back of your books list as many reasons as you can why tourists would want to visit Machu Picchu<br />
  3. 3. Machu Picchu is a popular tourist site in an extreme environment<br />
  4. 4. Machu Picchu<br />Which mountain range is Machu Picchu in?<br />
  5. 5. In today’s lesson we will finish our presentations on Machu Picchu and I will show you how to upload it onto you blogs.<br />
  6. 6. Learning Objectives <br />All students must be able to locate Machu Picchu on a map of South America<br />Most students should be able to explain the reasons for Machu Picchu’s location and reasons for the abandonment of the area by the Inca people<br />Some students could appreciate the costs and benefits of tourism to the local area<br />
  7. 7. Create your Blog<br />Go to www.blogspot.com<br />2. Click on the big orange box that says ‘CREATE A BLOG’<br />3. Fill in the details (make sure you make a note of the e-mail address, password and username-type them into a ‘word’ document and save the file)<br />4. Fill in your blog title: <br />(something like Sam’s BLS GCSE Geography Blog)<br />5. Fill in your blog address: blsyournamegeographyblog.blogspot.com<br />6. Choose your template<br />7. Get blogging! <br />

Machu Picchu’s history<br />Location of Machu Picchu (Include a location map)<br />Write an introduction to Machu Picchu (what it is, where it is, describe what physical/human geography features it is close to)<br />Write a short history of the site<br />Find a labelled diagram of the site (showing the different features of the site)<br />Explain what makes the site a good place for building a settlement<br />Explain what makes the site a bad place to build a settlement<br />Explain why you think Machu Picchu was abandoned y the Incas.<br />For example: So that the Incas would be able to defend themselves; As a retreat (hideaway) for the Inca royal family; As a pilgrimage site where Incas could go to worship nature; As a trading centre. Which one do you think is the most likely explanation, or can you think of one of your own – explain your decision.<br />

The impacts of tourism on Machu Picchu<br />Introduce how tourism affects the local people of Machu Picchu<br />Explain the benefits of having a strong tourist industry to the local people<br />Explain the negatives of having a strong tourist industry to the local people<br />What is being done to try and preserve the site?<br />
  10. 10. Posting your presentation onto your blog<br />1. In order to post a presentation on your blog you will have to set-up an account with www.slideshare.net. <br />2. Click on “sign up”and fill in the details.-write them down-don’t forget them!<br />3. When you have set up an account, log in and click on “upload” and follow the instructions to upload your Powerpoint file. This may take a few minutes to upload.<br />4. While it is uploading, open a new web-browser and login to you blog.<br />5. Once your presentation has uploaded, click on it. When it has loaded, at the bottom click on “more share options”, then click on ‘Blogger’.<br />6. Fill in your blog username, the blog address and your blog password. Then click on “post”.Your presentation should now appear on your blog.<br />7. You can now view your very own blog!-click “View blog”. You can customise it in any way you want and it can be visited from all over the world!<br />
  11. 11. Plenary<br />On a post-it note:<br />Write down 1 positive impact and 1 negative impact of tourism on Machu Picchu.<br />Write down 1 question you have about this piece of work. It can be about the blog or about the Machu Picchu work.<br />
