2. What is Behaviorism?
Who is behind the Behaviorism?
How can the Behaviorism be used in a
classroom?
How will I use the Behaviorism in my
classroom?
3. Behaviorism is the prediction and control of
human behavior using positive or negative
reinforcement.
Behaviorism believes that man and animal
learn to behave solely through a system of
positive and negative rewards.
4. The belief is that if you want a child/student
to produce a desirable behavior, reward
them for it, and the behavior will be repeated.
If you respond negatively to a behavior than
that behavior will stop.
5. (1849-1936)
Famous for experiments with dogs.
He provided dogs with food every time he
rang a bell, eventually the dogs would start to
salivate at the sound of the bell with no food
being given.
Process is called classic conditioning.
6. (1904-1990)
Did experiments on pigeons and taught them
to dance by using positive reinforcement.
Skinner believes human behavior was based
on stimulus-response theory.
Observed when children made attempts at
sounds, parents would smile and reinforce
them.
Eventually children learn to talk through
parents reinforcement.
7. Teacher’s often use behaviorism in classroom
management.
When student’s behave well they get
candy, when they disrupt the class, they get
time-out.
Students learn that behaving well produces a
reward while being disruptive will produce a
punishment.
8. Many software programs already use
behaviorism.
Many children’s games produce a positive
sound and/or visual every time a student does
something right.
In contrast, many will make a harsh sound
and/or visual if something is done wrong.
9. Reward students with candy and/or stickers
when behaving well.
Discipline students with time-out when
behaving badly.
Reward students for good grades with special
snacks or extra play time.
10. I believe that behaviorism has many positive
uses in the classroom, one being classroom
management.
Behaviorism doesn’t necessarily need
negative reinforcement but rather only
positive.
I think it’s best to reward students for positive
actions.
