3. What isPubMed®?
• Internet database developed by the National Center for Biotechnology
Information (NCBI) at the National Library of Medicine (NLM).
• Access primarily the MEDLINE database of references and abstracts
on life sciences and biomedical topics.
• Includes links to full text articles and other related resources.
• As of 8 February 2015, 14.2 million articles have links to full-text (of
which 3.8 million articles are available full-text for free for any user).
• About 500,000 new records are added each year.
4. History
• NLM has been indexing the biomedical literature since 1879, to help
health professionals access to information necessary for research,
health care, and education.
• What was once a printed index to articles, the Index Medicus, became
a database now known as MEDLINE®.
• MEDLINE® contains journal citations and abstracts for biomedical
literature from around the world.
• Since 1996, free access to MEDLINE® has been available to the
public online via PubMed® .
• PubMed® is one of several databases under NCBI’s Entrez retrieval
system.
• PubMed® currently includes over 19 million bibliographic citations.
5. PubMed® Database Coverage:
• MEDLINE® [5,200 biomedical journals, >15 million citations dating
back to 1950(from the print version of Index Medicus )]
• PreMedline (the in-process database for Medline, no medical subject
headings yet)
• Publisher-Supplied Citations.
• Very recent entries to records for an article before it is indexed with
Medical Subject Headings (MeSH®) and added to MEDLINE®.
• A collection of books available full-text and other subsets of NLM
records.
• Covers:

6. PubMed® Features
• Sophisticated search capabilities, including spell checker,
Advanced Search Builder, and special tools for searching
for clinical topics
• Assistance in finding search terms using the MeSH
(Medical Subject Heading) database of MEDLINE’s
controlled vocabulary
• Ability to store citation collections and to receive email
updates from saved searches using PubMed’s My NCBI
• Links to
-full-text articles,
- information about library holdings,
- other NLM databases and search interfaces.
8. PubMed® Searching:
To search PubMed, type a word or phrase into the query box (e.g., a
subject, author and/or journal).
Then click on the Search button or press the Enter key.
9. PubMed® Searching Using Operators
Three types: AND, OR, NOT.
1) AND: show results containing both
e.g. Concanavalin A AND Wheat Germ Agglutinin
2) OR : show results having either one or other
e.g. Concanavalin A OR Wheat Germ Agglutinin.
3) NOT : Show results having only one not other.
e.g. Lectin Concanavalin A NOT Wheat Germ Agglutinin.

11. About Citations
Each citation will give you
- the authors’ names,
- the title of the article,
- the journal name,
- year and month published
- volume number, issue number, and page numbers.
- This is followed by the type of article (review, clinical trial,
letter, case report, etc.).
- The PMID stands for “PubMed Identification.”
