  2. 2. Purpose <ul><li>Describe ebook read aloud as a reading experience for young children in the Head Start setting. </li></ul>
  3. 3. Research Questions <ul><li>What are the design features of the ebook read aloud settings? </li></ul><ul><li>What are characteristics of the read aloud activity using ebooks? </li></ul><ul><li>What are teachers’ impressions of the ebook read aloud experience and the ebook stories? </li></ul><ul><li>What are patterns/features of children’s interactions with ebooks at the touch screen and with the iPod Touch. </li></ul><ul><li>What is the influence of e-book read aloud experiences on children’s word learning? </li></ul>
  4. 4. 8-week cycle March 1-April 30/May 7 <ul><li>Select 3 children who score between 85-115 on the PPVT-IV. </li></ul><ul><li>Read the designated ebook each week on 2 different days for about 10-15 minutes each in the ebook-nook </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Sessions will be videotaped with a web cam and a FLIP. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Teach 5 words in each session, using Say It, Tell It, Do It strategy </li></ul><ul><ul><li>with exception of session 1. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>After each session, ask a series of questions about the experience, </li></ul><ul><li>After week 4 encourage children to explore the ebook on their own using the iPod Touch tool. Show children how to use the iPod Touch during play time. </li></ul><ul><li>Debrief with PD team at the end of weeks 2, 4, 6 and 8 on Adobe Connect </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Sessions will be audio-taped. </li></ul></ul>

Planning/Decision Tree <ul><li>In week 1, administer pre/post CBDM </li></ul><ul><li>Pre-read selected story </li></ul><ul><li>Select stop points for vocabulary words </li></ul><ul><li>After week 2, select manual or audio setting </li></ul><ul><li>After week 4, use mobi stories with follow up play on iPod Touch </li></ul>

Week 1- Days 1 & 2 <ul><li>Week One (March 1) – audio only; no iPod Touches </li></ul><ul><li>Day 1: *Teacher introduces children to the ebook nook </li></ul><ul><li>We will listen to stories together in the ebook nook. Sometimes we will stop and talk </li></ul><ul><li>about what is in the story. Sometimes we will talk about new words we are learning. </li></ul><ul><li>In our ebooks we use our pointer finger to gently touch *** here***. Watch I am </li></ul><ul><li>going to gently touch with my pointer finger and our story will start. Let’s listen . [Play </li></ul><ul><li>Bugs! Bugs! Bugs! All the way through.] </li></ul><ul><li>*Teacher/coach conducts CBDM on word sample with individual children. </li></ul><ul><li>Day 2: *Teacher shares Bugs! Bugs! Bugs! with pre-selected stops to teach 5 words. </li></ul><ul><li>Stop 1: title page; title, author, illustrator </li></ul><ul><li>Stops 2-6: teach new words: Say It; Tell It; Do It </li></ul><ul><li>Stop 6: After reading review the words & ask if enjoyed the story </li></ul><ul><li>Turn on web cam; coach uses FLIP. Repeat for each session. </li></ul>
  7. 9. Weeks 2-3-4 Select manual or audio setting; no iPod Touches <ul><li>Read the designated ebook 2x each week </li></ul><ul><li>Teach the vocabulary, using Say It, Tell It, Do It. Teach 5 words in each session. </li></ul><ul><li>Turn on the web cam each time; coaches use FLIP for each session. </li></ul><ul><li>Upload video footage to server </li></ul><ul><li>Debrief on these days: </li></ul>

Weeks 5-6-7-8 add iPod Touch option to ‘listen again’ <ul><li>Continue to share ebooks as in prior weeks </li></ul><ul><li>Demonstrate how to use the iPod Touch on Day 1 of Week 5. </li></ul><ul><li>Encourage children to ‘listen again’ on their own using the iPod Touch. </li></ul><ul><li>Start camera after each ebook shared reading experience </li></ul><ul><li>Debrief on days: </li></ul>
