  • 1. Akron Ready Steps Akron Ready Steps is a partnership between The University of Akron College of Education and Akron Summit Community Action, Inc.
  • 2. What is Akron Ready Steps?
    • The University of Akron and ASCA have been awarded federal funding to develop Head Start teachers’ knowledge and skill for a strong preschool program in language and literacy. The purpose is to help all of our children get ready for school.
  • 3. ARS has Four Main Components
    • Proven Instructional Practice
    • Essential Early Literacy Skills
    • Knowledgeable Teachers and Teachers Assistants
    • Rich Learning Environment
  • 4. Goals of Akron Ready Steps
    • Children- SBRR Instruction and Assessment
    • Teachers- Professional Development
    • 21 st Century Teaching-Learning Environment
    • Parent Involvement
    • Involving the Community in Improving Preschool Literacy Development and Education
  • 5. Professional Development
    • Teachers and Teaching Assistants will take part in all day professional development sessions, online tutorials, and monthly tutoring sessions led by Literacy Coaches.
    • Literacy Coaches are hired by the project and will work with the teachers, as well as be in the classrooms often.
  • 6. Environment
    • Harcourt Trophies-PreK will serve as the core reading program
    • High quality language and literacy-rich environments
    • 350 Read aloud books
    • 100 Quality e-books
    • 40 Take home books
    • Set of child ready laptops
    • Flip video camera
    • iPods
    • Smart Boards
    • Classroom Computers
  • 7. Assessment
    • Periodic learning assessments
    • Weekly checks throughout the school year
    • Children in the ARS program will be compared to others not in the project
    • Pre/post assessments
  • 8. Bridges to APS
    • A PreK-K Council will be formed as advisory
    • ARS & APS will develop and implement an evaluation model
    • Annual PreK-K Literacy Assessment Symposium
    • eAlbum to share with parents and the kindergarten teacher
