  1. 1. Akron Ready Steps Akron Ready Steps is a partnership between The University of Akron College of Education and Akron Summit Community Action, Inc.
  2. 2. What is Akron Ready Steps? <ul><li>The University of Akron and ASCA have been awarded federal funding to develop Head Start teachers’ knowledge and skill for a strong preschool program in language and literacy. The purpose is to help all of our children get ready for school. </li></ul>
  3. 3. ARS has Four Main Components <ul><li>Proven Instructional Practice </li></ul><ul><li>Essential Early Literacy Skills </li></ul><ul><li>Knowledgeable Teachers and Teachers Assistants </li></ul><ul><li>Rich Learning Environment </li></ul>

Professional Development <ul><li>Teachers and Teaching Assistants will take part in all day professional development sessions, online tutorials, and monthly tutoring sessions led by Literacy Coaches. </li></ul><ul><li>Literacy Coaches are hired by the project and will work with the teachers, as well as be in the classrooms often. </li></ul>

Environment <ul><li>Harcourt Trophies-PreK will serve as the core reading program </li></ul><ul><li>High quality language and literacy-rich environments </li></ul><ul><li>350 Read aloud books </li></ul><ul><li>100 Quality e-books </li></ul><ul><li>40 Take home books </li></ul><ul><li>Set of child ready laptops </li></ul><ul><li>Flip video camera </li></ul><ul><li>iPods </li></ul><ul><li>Smart Boards </li></ul><ul><li>Classroom Computers </li></ul>
  7. 7. Assessment <ul><li>Periodic learning assessments </li></ul><ul><li>Weekly checks throughout the school year </li></ul><ul><li>Children in the ARS program will be compared to others not in the project </li></ul><ul><li>Pre/post assessments </li></ul>
  8. 8. Bridges to APS <ul><li>A PreK-K Council will be formed as advisory </li></ul><ul><li>ARS & APS will develop and implement an evaluation model </li></ul><ul><li>Annual PreK-K Literacy Assessment Symposium </li></ul><ul><li>eAlbum to share with parents and the kindergarten teacher </li></ul>
