  • About Dr. Kirk Johnson
    • Dr. Kirk C. Johnson is a multi-disciplinary chiropractor who practices in Overland Park, Kansas. He is certified in Applied Kinesiology (AK), a Fellow in the Acupuncture Society of America, and a board certified Doctor of Chiropractic.
    • Dr. Johnson has postgraduate education in Applied Kinesiology (AK), Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Erchonia cold laser therapy, Homeopathy, Allergy Elimination, Clinical Nutrition, Functional Medicine, Blood Chemistry Analysis, Female Hormone Balance and Physiotherapy.
  • Chiropractic Care
    • Chiropractic
      • Chiropractic is the most widely used and regulated complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).
      • Chiropractors believe in the bodies ability to heal from within by correcting spinal alignment ultimately effecting nervous system function.
      • Subluxation: A bone that is moved out of juxta position leading to nerve irritation.
      • Tensegrity: The body is supported by all tissues, therefore failure in one tissue causes resounding dysfunction in others.
  • Chiropractic Research
    • In a Randomized controlled trial, 183 patients with neck pain were randomly allocated to manual therapy (spinal mobilization), physiotherapy (mainly exercise) or general practitioner care (counseling, education and drugs) in a 52-week study. The clinical outcomes measures showed that manual therapy resulted in faster recovery than physiotherapy and general practitioner care. Moreover, total costs of the manual therapy-treated patients were about one-third of the costs of physiotherapy or general practitioner care.
    • -- British Medical Journal, Korthals-de Bos et al. (2003)

        • Stress response testing, hormone levels, brain chemistry
  • Acupuncture

  • Acupuncture Research
    • German Acupuncture Trials for Chronic Low Back Pain, Arch Intern Med. 2007;167(17):1892-1898
    • Methods   A patient- and observer-blinded randomized controlled trial conducted in Germany involving 340 outpatient practices, including 1162 patients aged 18 to 86 years (mean ± SD age, 50 ± 15 years) with a history of chronic low back pain for a mean of 8 years. Patients underwent ten 30-minute sessions, generally 2 sessions per week, of verum acupuncture (n = 387) according to principles of traditional Chinese medicine; sham acupuncture (n = 387) consisting of superficial needling at nonacupuncture points; or conventional therapy, a combination of drugs, physical therapy, and exercise (n = 388). Five additional sessions were offered to patients who had a partial response to treatment (10%-50% reduction in pain intensity). Primary outcome was response after 6 months, defined as 33% improvement or better on 3 pain-related items on the Von Korff Chronic Pain Grade Scale questionnaire or 12% improvement or better on the back-specific Hanover Functional Ability Questionnaire. Patients who were unblinded or had recourse to other than permitted concomitant therapies during follow-up were classified as nonresponders regardless of symptom improvement.
    • Results   At 6 months, response rate was 47.6% in the verum acupuncture group, 44.2% in the sham acupuncture group, and 27.4% in the conventional therapy group. Differences among groups were as follows: verum vs sham, 3.4% (95% confidence interval, –3.7% to 10.3%;  P  = .39); verum vs conventional therapy, 20.2% (95% confidence interval, 13.4% to 26.7%;  P  < .001); and sham vs conventional therapy, 16.8% (95% confidence interval, 10.1% to 23.4%;  P  < .001.
    • Conclusions   Low back pain improved after acupuncture treatment for at least 6 months. Effectiveness of acupuncture, either verum or sham, was almost twice that of conventional therapy.
  • Nutrition and Functional Medicine
    • Detailed lab work is performed when indicated by the patient’s symptoms and presentation.
    • Careful Nutritional testing using Applied Kinesiology is used to determine the correct nutritional supplement.
    • Specific nutrition is given to each patient to help recover from their health condition.
    • Food Sensitivities are addressed and often the patient must change diet and lifestyle.
  • Common Women’s Health Conditions
    • Thyroid Disorders
    • Cyclical Migraines
    • Hormone Disorders
    • Infertility
    • Fibromyalgia and Rheumatoid Arthritis
    • Adrenal Insufficiency
  • Thyroid Disorders and Treatment
    • In my practice Hashimoto’s is the most common Thyroid disorder.
    • The patient presents with the typical Hypothyroid symptoms
      • Weight Gain
      • Lack of energy
      • Depression
    • Treatment is based on findings:
      • Thyroid Blood Chemistry
      • Iodine supplementation
      • Thyroid glandular nutrition
      • Acupuncture
      • Chiropractic Care
      • Food elimination and sensitivity testing
      • Dietary modification
  • Migraine Headaches
    • I have seen them present both cyclical and scattered.
    • Migraine headaches seem to be aberrant firing of pain fibers in the brain.
    • The best treatment in my clinical experience is Acupuncture.
    • If the migraine is cyclical nutrition is indicated
      • Chasteberry
      • Progesterone
      • Valerian root, passion flower, magnesium and calcium
  • Hormone Disorders
    • Most women present around menopause
    • Female hormone testing via saliva may be indicated.
    • Most women are Estrogen dominant and require Progesterone supplementation.
    • Menopausal symptoms are often relieved with Black Cohosh supplements.
    • Acupuncture can be used to help support symptoms of hot flashes and fatigue.
    • Dietary modification based on sensitivity findings.
  • Infertility
    • As you all know infertility is a major problem in women today.
    • Xenoestrogens that leech from many plastics have caused severe fertility problems in women.
    • Balancing the acupuncture meridian system in the first step in my infertility protocol.
    • Chiropractic Manipulation to balance the pelvic floor.
    • Dietary modification to eliminate refined sugar, flour, starch, corn, and wheat.
    • Cold laser therapy to restore proper ovarian function.
    • Once the woman’s cycle is balanced at 28-30 days I start with the specific infertility acupuncture protocol.
  • Fibromyalgia and Rheumatoid Arthritis
    • Chronic inflammatory conditions require the body to be able to feed them.
    • Dietary changes and detoxification are vitally important to change the body from pro-inflammatory to anti-inflammatory.
    • Balance Omega-3 to Omega-6 ratio will reduce chronic inflammation greatly.
    • Gut Dysbiosis is a huge problem in chronic conditions.
    • Movement is key, even though it is usually uncomfortable for these patients it is a must!
    • Chiropractic manipulation helps to maintain joint mobility and buys time to treat the inflammatory condition.
    • Acupuncture helps with the pain of Fibromyalgia and Rheumatoid Arthritis.
  • Adrenal Stress Disorder
    • Stress has a physiological and psychological impact.
    • 43% of all adults suffer adverse effects due to stress.
    • 75% - 90% of all medical visits are in some way related to stress.
  •
  •
  • Adrenal Stress Disorder
    • These patient’s respond great to phosphatidyl serine supplementation.
    • Acupuncture to calm stress response and decrease anxiety.
    • Cold Laser therapy to restore proper HPA function.
