  • 2. Flooding Advice Making an insurance claim 1 in 6 homes are at risk from flooding and with global  warming only increasing this risk, it is likely that you  could suffer at the hands of flooding. What is important is the way in which you deal with the  damage and then making your claim to rebuild your  home. Insurance companies are being urged by The  Environment Agency to repair damage with the fact  that it could happen again in mind. Moving electric  sockets further up the wall, replacing wooden windows  with synthetic frames and concrete floors instead of  wooden are just some techniques that are being  promoted. • 3. Advice for making a flood insurance claim 1. Get in contact with your insurance company straight  away.  They can arrange for someone to come out and  assess the damage there and then and can also make  sure that you have somewhere to stay and arrange for  emergency repairs. Your insurance company should have  a 24 hour helpline. 2. Make emergency repairs and keep the receipts so that  you can claim back the costs within your insurance claim. 3. Find somewhere to stay if you cannot return to your  property.  Your insurance company should cover this up  to a limit, so make sure that you talk this over with  them...before checking into the Ritz. 4. Fully comprehensive car insurance will cover the costs of  any damage done to a motor vehicle swept up in the  flooding to your home. 5. Turn off mains supplies for water and electricity, but if  this is too dangerous, then leave it to the professionals  and obviously do not use electrical appliances during a  flood. 6. Disinfect your property before returning to it. Flood  water picks up sewage and anything and everything in  it’s path so ensure that all traces have been eradicated  from your home before returning. 7. Don’t rush to decorate as a property needs time to dry  out, so keep windows and doors open to help air the  property. Local: 0845 686 0845           www.aka‐assistedclaims.co.uk
