Biomedical research

  1. 1. B I O M E D I C A L R E S E A R C H
  2. 2. Biomedical Research is an approach towards solving medical problems. It deals with beliefs or theories which can be proven or disproven through observations and experimentation. Before humans can be asked to participate in testing, researchers must first use animals whose living systems best represent that of humans. Almost every major medical advance in this century has been dependent on animal research and it remains critical to unlocking the cure to many diseases which still claim the lives of millions
  3. 3. It is the study of specific diseases and conditions (mental or physical), including detection, cause, prophylaxis, treatment and rehabilitation of persons; the design of methods, drugs and devices used to diagnose, support and maintain the individual during and after treatment for specific diseases or conditions;
  4. 4. It is the scientific investigation required to understand the underlying life processes which affect disease and human well- being, including such areas as cellular and molecular bases of diseases, genetics, immunology. A full list of such activities includes clinical trials and laboratory investigations, the study of exposure to environmental agents and various behavioral hazards.
  5. 5. • To improve the health of citizens and boost the competitiveness of health-related industries and businesses, while addressing global health issues. • Discovery and validation of novel drugs, treatments and care by analyzing and integrating large sets of data on genotype, immediate phenotype and disease identifying sub populations who are at highest absolute risk of disease and/or are most likely to benefit from a particular intervention based on information on biological, lifestyle and socio-demographic factors O B J E C T I V E S

  7. 7. G E R M A N Y H E L M H O LT Z A S S O C I AT I O N The Helmholtz Association, Germany's largest scientific research organization, has 17 scientific-technical and biomedical research centers, a staff of 30,000, and an annual budget of more than €3 billion The Association’s mission is to solve grand challenges that face society, science and industry by performing top-rate research in strategic programs in six core fields: Energy, Earth and Environment, Health, Key Technologies, Structure of Matter, Aeronautics, Space and Transport.
  8. 8. S O U T H A F R I C A ALLSA[National Allergy Society for South Africa]  The purpose of ALLSA is to advance the knowledge and practice of allergy and immunology through publications, meetings, and conferences and to foster the education of both students and the public. PARSA [Parasitology Society of Southern Africa] These society aims to:  To promote and sustain the study of parasitology  To disseminate information on the subject  To promote the interests of Parasitologists in Southern Africa  To provide representation on international organizations
  9. 9. S O U T H A F R I C A N M E D I C A L R E S E A R C H C O U N C I L Our vision Building a healthy nation through research Our mission To improve the nation's health and quality of life through promoting and conducting relevant and responsive health research
  10. 10. The list below represents the MRC Research Units which are listed according to the health priorities of SA. For more information on each, please click on the relevant Unit. • HIV and AIDS (including SAAVI) • Tuberculosis • Malaria • Cancer • African Traditional Medicine and • Drug Discovery • Genomics, proteomics and computational biology • Nutrition • Crime, violence and injury • Women, maternal and child health • Cardiovascular and metabolic diseases • Mental health and functional disorders • Policy and implementation
  11. 11. P H I L I P P I N E S The Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) was conceptualized through the Philippine Executive Order (EO) 674, authorizing the Philippine Department of Health to establish a research facility within the country for health advancement and medical research. Research Institute for Tropical Medicine The RITM is tasked by the Philippine Department of Health and the Philippine Government to supervise, plan, and successfully implement research programs to prevent and to control prevailing infectious andtropical diseases in the Philippines
  12. 12. R e l e v a n c e a n d I m p a c t o f B i o m e d i c a l R e s e a r c h Supporting medical research, helps medical researchers build the future of medicine. With the partnership of individual and corporate donors, it enables to make significant headway in advancing medical knowledge and improving patient care. The increased longevity of humans over the past century can be significantly attributed to advances resulting from medical research. Vaccines for measles and polio, insulin treatment for diabetes, classes of antibiotics for treating a host of maladies, medication for high blood pressure, improved treatments for AIDS, statins and other treatments for atherosclerosis, new surgical techniques such as microsurgery, and Increasingly successful treatments for cancer are results of successful biomedical research that up until now, is still being used to cure certain diseases.
