  11. 11. Geography A2 Level Unit 3: Contested Planet (Energy Insecurity) What is the future after oil? Tar sands can be refined into petroleum. Only recently been exploited as oil prices have increased making it economically viable. Environmental impacts are colossal; huge amount of heating required to separate out the oil (usually generated from burning natural gas), 4 barrels of water to create one barrel of oil and huge cost to local environment and ecosystem.
