Why is the venetian hotel having to rethink its main feature…?
  • Increase in urban area
    • Las Vegas in:
    • 1972
    Las Vegas in: 1992
  • The pressures in the usa
    • The population density of the US is only 30 people per km 2 compared to the UK’s 241 km 2
    • The USA has much more space and resources to accommodate more people and actively encourages in-migration
    • There are two clear trends happening in the US:
      • A shift from the older industrial cities of the North like Chicago to the newer cities of the south and west
      • The loss of population from inner city areas as industries, followed by people, have mover out into the surrounding rural areas.
    • Cities are growing up in remote rural areas where only small settlements were before
    • Urban sprawl through their growth is continuing to eat up the rural countryside- this growth is uncontrolled
    • Las Vegas is an example of this.
  • What is the future for rural areas in Medcs?
    • Can you think of two futures for rural areas in MEDCs?
    • What would the future be if the current growth continued, unchecked?
    • What would happen in restrictions were put in place (and worked) and sustainability was a key feature in any new living space development?
