R3 What Are The Links Between Economic Change And

 1. 1. What are the links between economic change and urbanisation? Can you record the push and pull factors, showing the reasons how industry is causing Mexicans to move into towns and cities in large numbers?
 2. 2. What is happening in Mexico?

Rapid expansion of the manufacturing industry has led to problems in the growing towns and cities as people move there from rural areas to find jobs.

As farming became more modernised in Mexico, less people were needed to work the land and as the factories were built in towns and cities, that is where they moved to.

 3. 3. What were the problems?

There were problems caused due to the rapid industrialisation and urbanisation

The towns could not build housing fast enough for the rate of people moving to them for work

There were not enough jobs for all the people who were arriving

What do you think were the results of these two problems?

 4. 4. Results of the problems

With no housing, shanty towns were set up, with thousands of people living in them, with poor sanitation and living conditions

With the lack of jobs, people created their own, in what we call the informal sector (don’t formally get a paycheck, or pay taxes etc.) this means jobs like haircutting, shoe shining, luggage carrying, vehicle washing etc.

Nearly all of these informal jobs take place on the street- can you give any examples of other informal jobs?

 5. 5. Is it the same in MEDCs?

What type of employment has been decinlining in MEDCs?

… employment in agriculture, fishing and forestry as due to mechanisation, less people are needed

What area of employment and industry has been growing in MEDCs?

… employment in the quaternary sector: in areas of new, often high-tech industries

 6. 6. What has led to this growth?

People can work from home more

Internet and phone access

It is not necessary to have to go into work every morning for work

‘ Footloose’ industries: these are industries that can be placed at any location without relying on market, workforce etc. They usually locate along a main transport route and have excellent facilities on site.

 7. 7. Exam style question

Do in lesson if time, if not do at home- get them to mark each others, write targets. Etc.
