  • GEOGRAPHY AT THE MOVIES! Science Fact or Science Fiction Natural disasters such as volcanoes are often used as the basis for films and cartoons but how accurately are these natural disasters portrayed? Can you tell the difference between science fact and science fiction?
  • SUPERMAN – VOLCANO - 1942 Watch the cartoon and in your books note the following: •Any three things about the cartoon that you know are ‘scientific fact’ based on what you know about volcanoes. • Now write down 3 things that are not scientifically possible or are unlikely to actually happen.   • 1. What types or tests / monitoring do the scientists do to check the level of volcanic activity – list what you see. 2. What are the hazards for people living in Dante’s Peak? 3. Why don’t the council follow the USGS advice to evacuate the town? 4. Describe three things in the film that are scientifically reasonable or likely to happen. 5.
