The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) is the next step of economic integration transforming ASEAN into a single market and production base by 2015. The economic integration goals will include the elimination of tariffs, free professional movement, capital and a faster customs clearance procedure. Free Trade Area (FTAs) will be a key strategy for ASEAN to gain greater market access into trading partners and to attract foreign direct investments to ASEAN. AEC will increase regional economic prosperity and stability and reduce the development gaps among members.
The guiding principles of establishing the AEC is that ASEAN shall act in accordance to the principles of an open, outward-looking, inclusive and market-driven economy consistent with multilateral rules as well as adherence to rules-based systems for effective compliance and implementation of economic commitments.
The blueprint of AEC was developed to identify the priority measures and actions with clear target and timelines to be undertaken to establish the AEC by 2015.
ASEAN Member States include Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Myanmar and Viet Nam.
