Basics of Flight and Aerodynamics (Groups B/D) Presentation Transcript

  • 1. Groups A and B: 1 st Year On-Level Centennial Aviation Club BASICS OF FLIGHT AND AERODYNAMICS
  • 2. ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS
    • What gets a plane off the ground?
    • What basic forces are working on the airplane during flight?
    • What are the parts of an airplane and what do they do?
    • What does “aerodynamic” mean?
  • 3.
    • Bernoulli's Principle- the faster a fluid is moving the lower the pressure
    Daniel Bernoulli
  • 4. BASIC FORCES IN FLIGHT
    • Four Fundamentals of Flight
      • Lift
      • Thrust
      • Weight/Gravity
      • Drag
    Pg. 25
  • 5. LIFT
    • Opposes the downward force of weight
      • Produced by the dynamic effect of the air acting on the wing
      • Shape of airfoil changes the way lift acts on the airplane
      • Bernoulli’s Principle
  • 6. WEIGHT/GRAVITY
    • The downward force opposing lift
      • The combined load of the airplane itself (crew, fuel, cargo/baggage)
      • Force exists because of the presence of gravity
  • 7. THRUST
    • Forward force produced by the propeller
      • Pulls the airplane through the air
      • Opposes drag
  • 8. DRAG
    • Backward force acting opposite to thrust
      • Caused by the disruption of airflow by the plane itself and its parts (wings, landing gear, etc.)
      • Two types: parasite (the most common) and induced
      • Effects how aerodynamic the plane
      • is
  • 9. ANGLE OF ATTACK angle between the wing chord and the relative wind
  • 10. THE WING
    • Produces the lift
    • Holds the plane up while in flight
    • Bernoulli's Principle- the faster a fluid is moving the lower the pressure
  • 11. AILERON CONTROLS BANK Left bank Right bank Turn the yoke to the left and the left aileron goes down (right goes up) Airplane banks to the left Turn the yoke to the right and the right aileron goes down (left goes up) Airplane banks to the right
  • 12. ELEVATOR CONTROLS PITCH Pull the yoke out and the elevator goes up Airplane pitches up Push the yoke in and the elevator goes down Airplane pitches down
  • 13. RUDDER CONTROLS YAW Push left rudder pedal and the plane yaws to the left Push right rudder pedal and the plane yaws to the right
  • 14. PROPELLER CONTROLS THRUST
  • 15. FLAPS CREATE EXTRA LIFT Flaps down
  • 16. PARTS OF THE AIRPLANE Pg. 19 3? ___________ 5/13? _________ 15? __________ 8? ___________ 6/12? _________ 4? ___________ 11? __________ 10? __________ 1? ___________ wing strut ailerons wings horiz. stab. flaps wing strut elevator rudder propeller
  • 17. I’M DONE… BUT FIRST
    • What gets a plane off the ground?
    • What basic forces are working on the airplane during flight?
    • What are the parts of an airplane and what do they do?
    • What does aerodynamic mean?
  • 18. CHS SEMINAR
    • “ The Wonders of Flight”
    • Session 2 - Mr. Harhay, Room I-46
    • Starts at the beginning of second quarter
    • Don’t forget to sign up at the end of session 1
  • 19. QUESTIONS???
