대안적 생활양식과 쓰레기제로운동(4) 정토회는 한국사회에 민주화 요구가 분출하고 사회주의권이 몰락해 가던 1988년 ‘일과 수행’을 하나로 하여 ‘모두가 행복할 수 있는 세상’을 함께 찾고 만들어나가는 수행공동체로 출발하였다. 정토회는 그동안 새로운 사회에 대한 희망을 일구기 위하여 환경문제와 제3세계 빈곤문제, 평화와 인권문제를 활동의 주요과제로 삼고 “맑은 마음, 좋은 벗, 깨끗한 땅”을 만들기 위한 실천과 수행활동을 해 왔다. 맑은 마음으로 욕심을 버리고 나눔을 실천할 때 인생이 행복해지고 이웃과 좋은 벗이 되어 세상을 평화롭게 할 수 있으며, 나아가 인간과 자연과의 조화로운 관계를 통해 깨끗한 땅, 아름다운 지구를 만들 수 있다는 것이 활동의 기본정신이다. 특히 정토회는 ‘내 것’ 중심의 소유에 기반한 소비 지향적인 탐욕과 경쟁중심의 생활양식이 오늘날 인류는 물론 뭇 생명들의 생존마저 위협하는 생태위기를 불러왔다는 데 대한 반성을 통해 1999년부터 ‘쓰레기제로운동’을 시작하게 되었다. 쓰레기제로운동은 ‘이 우주 안의 모든 생명은 한 몸으로서 누구의 것도 아님을 알아, 적게 쓰고 적게 가짐으로써 자연과 더불어 조화와 균형을 이루는 대안적인 생활양식과 새로운 문명을 만들어 나가는데’ 궁극적인 목표를 두고 있다. ‘도시’라는 공간에서 쓰레기 없는 사회를 만들어보자는 취지로 시작된 쓰레기제로운동을 전개하면서 정토회 내에서는 다양한 실험과 실천활동을 전개해 오고 있다. 우리가 먼저 직접 실천해 보고 그 경험을 통해 대안적인 생활양식 운동의 필요성과 구체적인 방안을 사회화하는데 쓰레기 제로운동의 목적을 두고, 밖으로 배출되는 쓰레기의 제로화, 음식문화의 전환으로 음식물쓰레기 줄이기와 음식물쓰레기의 완전 퇴비화, 화장실 쓰레기를 줄이기 위한 뒷물 이용하기, 캔 제품 사용의 억제를 위한 캔 제품 반입금지 등 보다 근본적인 관점에서 실천활동을 해 오고 있다.
