This document contains four short stories written by students as examples of "Sizzling Starts" that grab the reader's attention. The first story is about a boy who is arrested for smiling against the law. The second tells of a girl whose shadow comes alive and eats with her. The third is about a girl trying to hide her secret dragon from her parents. The fourth switches a boy and his parents and they have to figure out who is who.

1. The Grade 3/4s have been working on writing Sizzling
Starts to grab the reader’s attention! We had a Sizzling
Start competition throughout the year level. Here are some
of the winners:
Smiling is against the Law by Geordie:
“Hands behind your back and mouth where I can see it!”
“But officer, I only smirked. I swear, I would never smile. I couldn’t take the guilt!:
Nevertheless, the officer cuffed me.
“Your staring five years in the face and your barely 10.”
Your shadow is alive by Mia:
OMG my shadow is moving and I am standing still it must be alive. I’ll go over there and
introduce myself. I asked it if it wanted to have something to eat with me. It said yes. It was
a bit funny talking and having something to eat with a shadow especially your own shadow
and plus it was hard to have a proper conversation with it because it thought the same
thing as I did.
Dragons can be hard to find by Grace:
I have secret dragon that I always bring out when my parents are away. I can’t hide it. So
anyway I can’t hide it at all when the parents came back. When I heard the door slam, I
could not wake up the dragon. I whispered to him, “will you get up!”
You change places with your parents for one whole day by Charlie:
“Son your already taller than me. Wait I’m your son. What’s wrong with me, I should be
your son! Wow I should know whose who, but now this has gone too far. We need to find
out!” I said.
“But how do we do that?” he says.
“I know how!”
