  • 2. What is Zimbra?
    Unix based e-mail and collaboration server
    Makes use of Postfix, Jetty, MySQL, ClamAV and other open source projects
    Enhanced AJAX web interface
    Can integrate with AD for authentication
    Powerful command line facility for account provisioning and administration
    Horizontally scalable, add servers to support more load
    Offers Zimlets, or plugins, to offer new functionality and an API to develop your own
    Open source license, can download and use the server for free without support, licensed features
    Also offers Zimbra Desktop, a desktop e-mail client
  • 3. Licensed Features
    Built in backup facility, dumps flat file storage of data to a disk location, configurable number of days/weeks/months of backups to keep
    Outlook Connector plugin, makes server smell like Exchange; keeps mail, contacts, calendar, tasks in sync with server
    Mobile integration licenses for ActiveSync
    E-mail and phone support, X number of tickets per year
    Server clustering
    Allows re-branding of the site logos

    Running v5.0.18, will upgrade soon to v6
    Running on RHEL 5.3
    Several mobile users with ActiveSync on iPhone
    Converting administrative offices to Outlook plugin, shared calendar on Zimbra, etc office by office as requested or as we have time to push
    Came from a very basic Novell web mail, so the AJAX interface is strikingly different for students, many have commented that they like it
    Were a mostly POP campus before, some faculty/staff now enjoying server syncronization
    Discovered Zimbra through open source edition, used it for prospective student e-mail addresses
