What’s  next  for  Pop  City?  And   Pi<sburgh?  •  How  can  we  raise  the  bar  in  our  community  in     advancing  new  ideas  for  social  change?    •  How  can  we  bring  a  broad  cross-­‐sec*on  of   talented  people  together  to  work  on  a  specific   problem  with  the  objec*ve  of  finding  a  new   way  to  work  through  it?  
  • 3. Through  social  innova/on.  Unleashing  new  ideas  to  create    solu2ons  for    unmet  needs  for  the  public  good.    
  • 4. Throw  a  big  party  for  thinkers.  •  Bring  together  good  thinkers  from  many  sectors   with  professionals  working  on  the  issue  and  an   engaged  audience  willing  to  make  a  difference.    •  Join  civic  leaders  with  the  influencers  driving   change.    •  Provide  a  plaLorm  to  consider  ways  to  solve  a   problem  with  a  call  to  ac*on  so  people  can  get   can  involved  with  the  community  in  crea*ve   ways.

  • 6. Collabora*on  is  a  contact  sport.  •  LUMA  Ins*tute,  our  partner  in  idea*on:  80   people.  Six  categories.  Hundreds  of  ideas  over   3  hours.  •  The  Sprout  Fund,  to  fund  one  or  more  of   those  ideas  from  each  event  up  to  $50,000.  •  The  Pi<sburgh  Founda*on  to  house  the   ini*a*ve  with  three  other  founda*ons.

What’s  involved.  (Plenty)  •  The  idea*on  event:  ge[ng  ideas  in  small   groups,  shaping  ideas  and  presen*ng  one   concept  to  all  •  Awarding  an  idea  the  winner  -­‐-­‐  $$$!  •  Following  up  with  workshops,  mul*ple  feature   stories  and  videos  about  the  event,  and  a   focus  area  on  social  innova*on.    
  • 8. The  main  goals?    advancing  ideas:  Around  Civic  design.      Placemaking.        Social   jus*ce.    City-­‐building.    Cultural  vitality.      More  than  a  presenta*on—something  comes  of   it  and  the  momentum  con*nues  through  Pop   City.      
  • 9. THE CHALLENGESiX  Session  1:  January  31,  2012      An  idea*on  session  that  helps  80  people  with    wildly  divergent  ideas  and  backgrounds    generate  12  concepts  for  advancing  change    around  civic  design  and  place-­‐making  –  in    just  a  few  hours…      
  • 10. How  might  we  dis*nguish    our  city  and  contribute  to    its  vitality?      How  might  we  create  more    places  that  energize  residents    and  a<ract  visitors?      How  might  we  improve  in  the  way  of  public  art,  green  spaces,    ge[ng  around  and  street  life?
