They found love at the school they loved. They had recently had gotten engaged. They were planning a wedding for 2013. They had entered a valentines day competition that would change their lives.
Feb. 2nd, 2012.How I Met My Hawkmate Competition had reached headlines. …and not for a good reason.
After getting called back, we learned that theAlumni Association had “discussed oursubmission,” and inevitably decided NOT to postour submission because “the Catholic Churchdoes not recognize same-sex marriage.” Despitethe ten years we (collectively) studied at SaintJoseph’s, the hundreds of thousands of dollarswe’ve paid in tuition dollars over these ten years, and countless hours we have dedicated to SJU,our relationship does not seem to exist in theAlumni Association’s eyes. To them, we arenot hawkmates.
Saint Joe’s said…"Saint Joseph’s University fully supports and is in agreement with the Catholic Church’s teachings regarding homosexuality and same sex marriage. But they also said… As a Catholic, Jesuit university, Saint Joseph’s is a welcoming, inclusive community. Our focus is on respect and caring for all individuals as individuals."
"I never thought that many people wouldsupport us and really fight for this," saidMacTurk. "I think it attests to the caliber ofstudents that St. Joes producers that so manypeople would really stand up for what theybelieve is right no matter who the injustice hasbeen committed against."
