  3. 3.  Rickets is the softening and weakening of bones in children, usually because of an extreme and prolonged vitamin D deficiency.
  4. 4.  Delayed growth  Pain in the spine, pelvis and legs  Muscle weakness  Bowed legs  Thickened wrists and ankles  Breastbone projection
  5. 5. Deficiency in  Vitamin D  Calcium  phosphorous
  6. 6.  Age  Dark skin  Premature birth  Anti-seizure medications  Exclusive breast-feeding.
  7. 7.  If left untreated, rickets may lead to:  Failure to grow  Abnormally curved spine  Skeletal deformities  Dental defects  Seizures
  8. 8.  vitamin D and calcium supplements  Surgical and other procedures
  9. 9.  During breast feeding give oral vitamin D daily(400 IU drops)  Increase the activity of 1 α hydroxylase  Decreased the activity of 24 hydroxylase
  10. 10.  Rocaltrol Which is commonly used in managment of hyperparathyriodism Also enhances calcium absorption
  11. 11.  Calderol commonly used as hypoparathyroid agents in some areas also used as vitamin d in the treatment of rickets
  12. 12.  PTH increases the activity of 1-α- hydroxylase enzyme, which converts 25- hydroxycholecalciferol to 1,25- dihydroxycholecalciferol, the active form of vitamin D.
