How can Web 2.0 help me be a better teacher?
21 st Century Learners
Their goal: to ensure that today’s students are well prepared to be tomorrow’s innovators, leaders and engaged citizens of the world.
Basics of the Survey
Data collected through online surveys and verified through a series of focus groups and interviews.
Since fall 2003, over 1.2 million K-12 students, teachers, administrators and parents representing over 14,000 schools in all 50 states.
Data represents the largest collection of authentic input on education, technology, 21st century skills and schools of the future .
What do students do regularly with technology outside of school?
Gaming over 64% of students play online
Download music #1 activity by MS and HS students
Social networking 40% of middle school students
67% of high school students
Email, IM, text messaging over 50% of HS students
Survey Conclusions….
This year 60% of parents and 73% of teachers rate good technology skills as important
74% of high school students consistently identify good tech skills as the #1 skill they need to be successful in the 21st century.
Only 23% of those students feel that their school is doing a good job preparing them for future jobs.

Since 2004, students’ discontent with school rules that limit their access to technology at school has grown by 46%
School rules keep them from using tools they use everyday
The other major obstacle today is the teacher – over 40% of students think so!

Personalized homepage for Google Account holders
It was originally launched in May 2005.
Its features include the capability to add web feeds and Google Gadgets of particular interest to user

RSS – “Really Simple Syndication” The ability of web content to be shared and republished

AGGREGATORS
What is an Aggregator?
Holds a list of web sites and resources that offer RSS feeds.
When it’s opened the aggregator retrieves the information from each RSS feed page listed.
Once subscribed to a feed, an aggregator is able to check for new content at user-determined intervals and retrieve the update.
Google Reader
Stay up to date Google Reader constantly checks favorite news sites and blogs for new content, whether a site updates daily or monthly.

Blogs
A weblog (usually shortened to blog ) is a web-based publication consisting primarily of articles
Most often, articles are listed in reverse chronological order.
Blogging is the posting of journal-like pages to a website. These pages can contain photos or media - mainly focus on written thoughts posted to a website.
Typically, a blog "post" can be "commented" on by others, allowing for discussion on the topic.

Google Sites is a free, online, web editor that lets you easily create your own group websites.
Google even gives you your own URL [sites.google.com/site/ sitename ] and 10 GB of storage for your pages and uploaded files.
Negative: At this point, no code embed feature

Animoto Create video from your pictures. Apply for Animoto in Education account for your students and you will be able to create full-length video, instead of the standard 30 second video.

Social Bookmarking
The ability to save and categorize a personal collection of bookmarks and share them with others.
Users may also take bookmarks saved by others and add them to their own collection, as well as to subscribe to the lists of others.

Photo Sharing Sites
Act as online storage spaces for photos, with the ability to tag and organize each photo, as well as publishing anyone the user selects.
Other users have the opportunity to leave comments for the photographer on any image that has been made available.
Some photo sharing web sites offer the ability to edit photos online, make notes, post photos to a blog and a variety of other features.
Flickr
Flickr is an image and video hosting website
It was one of the earliest Web 2.0 applications – launched in 2004
In addition to being a popular Web site for users to share personal photographs, the service is widely used by bloggers as a photo warehouse.
Its popularity has been fueled by its organization tools, which allow photos to be tagged and browsed.
It claims to host more than 2 billion images.
