Proposal for a ComprehensiveCurriculum for Addiction sciences Fellowship Dr. Ahmed Albehairy, M.D Psychiatry Consultant Ministry of Health, Egypt
Why we are in need for it ? Addiction medicine , is evident currently as distinctive branch in psychiatry, proper subspecialty. Forming a homogeneity of scientific community in addiction for education , training, and researches. Managing addiction, in our Arab countries is in need for larger number of personnel and hours for services.
?Who will join the study and training Psychiatrists. Psychologists. Psychiatry nurse staff.After passing their main specialization in General Psychiatry.
The curriculum in this proposal isformed of 5 modules. 35 sections. Time needed: 6 hrs./ section. ( 1 wks). 1 or 2 years training and exam.
Main Modules I- Assessment. II- Counseling ,psychotherapy . III-Care and health services management. IV- Prevention and Psycho education for the patients and community. V-Professional abilities and responsibilities.
Main Concepts , included in the curriculum Knowledge Skills Attitude
knowledge Interviewing. Biopsychosocial approaches. Diagnosis and D.D. Related psychopharmacology, and neurosciences (for psychiatrists and some for nurses). Drugs & Alcohol in pregnancy , premature exposure of neonate, vulnerable pts.(for psychiatrists and some for nurses).
knowledge Motivational techniques. Co morbidities. CBT. Relapse prevention programs. Counseling, (general, addiction, family) Other types of psychotherapy ( supportive, psychoanalytic, interpersonal, DBT,)
knowledge Brief psychotherapy in emergency. Group. Family therapy Rehabilitation ( art, occupational and spiritual religious ). Documentation. Financial sources, administrative work.
knowledge Establishing health services and how to modify the treating programs. Hepatitis c and other medical conditions related to addiction. Services for special populations ( children, adolescence, women, disability and in prison). Auditing and researches for services. Network therapy, and 1ry care services. stigma .
knowledge Recovery . Psycho education for the patients, family, community stakeholders and volunteers. Ethical codes, legal aspects, cultural differences. Aspects and ways for CME.
Skills Interviewing. 8 skills Documentation. filing. Team work decision skills. Plan of management ( inpatient, out patient , day care………etc.). Clinical decision in psychopharmacology. How to use rapid test and viva and system for investigation and security.
Skills Using different scales as , ASI, MINI, MMPI, others. Psychotherapy techniques. Group. Counseling. Brief psychotherapy in emergency. Family therapy Relapse prevention Case managers. ??occupational , art, religious therapists.
Skills Designing programs for special populations , needs . Easily contacting other areas of services and help in addiction. NA. Programs of infection control , sexual education, parenting counselling and skills, pregnant addicts, in prison . Psychoeducation and lecturing skills. Research, critical appraisal for research. Easily involved in ethical issues and legal aspects of clinical point of views.
Attitude Client concept. Individuality and appropriateness of the service. Patients rights. Staff ‘s rights. Family problems. Respect for others ‘role in the team. Wholistic approach in management , in diagnosis and management .
Attitude Respect and understanding lapse and relapse, suicide, HCV, HIV. …..etc Punctuality in documentation , filing , referral, research, auditing , Q.C., I.C. Ethical community in hospital. Not to judge the patient , undercover the service he s only a patient .
